What we know so far about the Beetlejuice sequel

After a long wait, the Beetlejuice sequel is finally making progress, and there are some exciting updates in store for fans. Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2 has received official approval, and the original stars, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, are all set to reprise their roles.

Joining the cast is Jenna Ortega, who will portray the daughter of Winona Ryder’s character, Lydia Deetz. Additionally, Justin Theroux will have a role in the film, although the details remain undisclosed.

Beetlejuice 2 is scheduled for release on September 6, 2024. Filming is set to begin in London on May 10. The film is based on a script written by Wednesday creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

The sequel does not seem likely to pick up from where things left, given the massive 35-year gap between the two films. Instead, it might follow the footsteps of Top Gun: Maverick and fast-forward the narrative to the characters’ present lives.

Why is the Beetlejuice franchise still popular?

The original Beetlejuice movie featured other actors such as Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones, and Catherine O’Hara. With a budget of just $15 million, the film managed to gross $80 million. Beetlejuice has remained popular in pop culture, leading to a musical and animated series.

The 1988 movie became a huge success and boosted Michael Keaton’s popularity. Keaton and Burton would later collaborate again on the 1989 Batman. Beetlejuice was both critically acclaimed and a commercial hit

  • It even inspired a stage musical that received a Tony nomination. The musical ran for four years but was interrupted by the pandemic and eventually closed on Broadway in January.
