Oscars 2023’s shocking snubs: Best films that didn’t win big at the Academy

At Oscars 2023, Everything Everywhere All At Once had a historic seven-award sweep, which meant the committee had to snub some serious contenders. The 95th Academy Awards had a great lineup of films with several of them nominated across multiple categories. The final winners were well-deserved and justified, and yet fans weren’t impressed with some excellent films that went home empty-handed.

The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans had the most number of nominations apart from Everything Everywhere All At Once. However, both films did not win a single award despite praise from critics and audiences. Top Gun: Maverick was expected to win in more categories but ended up winning just one award. Let’s take a look at some of the best films that didn’t win big at the 95th Academy Awards.

Why were The Fabelmans and The Banshees of Inisherin snubbed at Oscars 2023?

With The Fabelmans, veteran director Steven Spielberg managed to make his most personal film at the age of 76. The coming-of-age movie follows Sam Fabelman and his adolescent years as he discovers his love for filmmaking in a tumultuous Jewish household.

The Fabelmans was nominated across seven categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. And yet, Spielberg and co. had to go home empty handed. The snub came as a shock for fans who were thoroughly moved by the film.

The Banshees of Inisherin was a refreshing take on the dark comedy genre. Set on an isolated Irish island, the film featured stunning performances from Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, Brendan Gleeson, and Kerry Condon.

All four of the primary cast members were nominated for acting at the Oscars and the film itself had nine nominations in total, albeit winning none in the end.

Other major films that didn’t win Oscars as predicted

Tom Cruise practically saved Hollywood with Top Gun: Maverick last year. Despite being a sequel, it was refreshing to see a standalone star-driven action blockbuster climb the box office charts. While CGI-heavy superhero films dominate the industry, Tom Cruise opted for stunts on real planes flown by the actors themselves.

Despite these efforts, Top Gun: Maverick won only one Oscar, for Best Sound. Other films like Triangle of Sadness, Tár, and Elvis also had multiple nominations and yet won none. Some great films like Nope and Athena did not even make it to the list of nominees for reasons only the Academy knows.

Ace cinematographer Roger Deakins spoke about how The Batman was snubbed in the Best Cinematography category despite being one of the best looking films of the year.

Big winners at the 95th Academy Awards

Everything Everywhere All At Once managed to steal the show entirely with its seven awards from 11 nominations. Social media users have reacted well to the wholesome victory speeches from the cast and crew members such as Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and the Daniels

Apart from them, German anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front won four Oscars, including Best International Feature Film and Best Cinematography.

Despite the snubs, the 95th Academy Awards ended on a positive note, thanks to fan-favorite moments such as Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor win.
