The much-awaited final trailer for The Super Mario Bros Movie is out and it promises to be an absolute joyride for the fans. The legendary Nintendo game’s movie adaptation has been in the works for quite some time since the official announcement in 2018. The brief 90-second trailer teases Super Mario fans with iconic characters and some blink and miss Easter Eggs.

Nintendo collaborates with Universal Pictures-owned Illumination, best known for the Despicable Me and Minions franchise. The trailer debuted during a special Nintendo direct and hints at a similar Minions-esque comic energy throughout. 

After a string of postponed release dates, we finally have an official confirmation to look forward to. The Super Mario Bros. Movie releases next month first in the United States and 60 other countries worldwide on April 5 and later in Japan on April 23.

The new trailer finally reveals what the plot of the animated movie will revolve around. It’s about fan favorite characters Mario and Princess Peach setting out on an adventurous mission to save Luigi from the evil villain Bowser

As fans of the classic game would know, the epic quest begins when Mario and his brother Luigi are transported down a pipe into a magical world. In the trailer, we see the evil Bowser rallying his army of Goombas and Koopas to destroy Princess Peach’s Mushroom Kingdom.

The stand-out reference to the game from the trailer comes towards the end. We see characters racing down Rainbow Road, the most famous track from Mario Kart. The trailer also features some nods to the Mario spin-off, Super Smash Bros and some cool Easter eggs such as a star-like Lumas and Fire Donkey Kong.

The cast is spearheaded by big names like Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), Charlie Day (Luigi), Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong), Keegan Michael-Key (Toad) and Fred Armisen (Cranky Kong).

Teen Titans Go! creators Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are directing the film while Minions 2 writer has worked on the screenplay. Original Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto serves as a producer to make sure the film remains true to his game’s vision.

Forty five days after the theatrical release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be available for streaming on Peacock. Netflix plans to stream the film from late 2023.

So far, fans and critics on social media have received the trailer with excitement, that’s almost unexpected. This is because most people were skeptical of the animated movie to actually live up to the game’s hype. Check out some of the reactions here.
