The Met Gala was started in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert in hopes to raise money for the newly opened Costume Institute. Since then, the event is held every year on the first Monday of May. It also marks the beginning of the annual exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This year, the Met Ball will take place on May 1, as the month is beginning with a Monday. Guests will be scene giving homage to German fashion designer and style icon, the late Karl Lagerfeld. The theme for Met Gala 2023 is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.
Lagerfeld is a celebrated fashion personality, who was the creative director for Chanel. He also designed for brands like Patou, Balmain, Chloé, and Fendi. The late designer created Chanel’s iconic double interlocking ‘c’ logo in 1983. The logo is one of the most recognized symbols in the world today.
Vogue will live stream the red carpet on YouTube
Met Gala is a private event with entries based on invites only. However, people can view all the fantastical costumes and dresses worn by the stars on Vouge’s YouTube channel or official website. The guest list for the gala remains a secret until stars start to arrive on the red carpet.
However, fans will be heartbroken to hear that Blake Lively will not be attending the ball this year. The actress is a regular on the star-studded carpet and turns heads with her well-planned, on-theme outfits every year. Lively announced the news on Thursday, at the grand re-opening of the Tiffany & Co. Fifth Avenue in New York City.
La La Anthony, Derek Blasberg, and Chloe Fineman will host the event, while social media star Emma Chamberlain will return as Vogue’s red-carpet correspondent. Penelope Cruz, Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, and Roger Federer will join Anna Wintour as official Met Gala co-chairs this year.
The red carpet coverage will start at 6 pm ET, on Monday, May 1.
