What is a Legacy Blue Check? Exploring why celebrity accounts will lose Twitter blue tick this April

legacy blue check removed from twitter

Celebrity or legacy accounts on Twitter are set to lose their verified blue check this month. The news was announced by Twitter CEO Elon Musk on April 11. His tweet read:
“Final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20”

Musk has been hinting at the removal of the unpaid blue check since the beginning of 2023.

Currently, people can get blue badges beside their usernames by subscribing to Twitter Blue, a paid monthly subscription. Before Twitter Blue, the checkmarks were only given to notable accounts, acting as a mark of authenticity. However, it seems that this is going to change very soon.

Legacy Blue Check will be removed from Twitter

Elon Musk bought the micro-blogging website last year and has added numerous features since then. One significant change added to the portal is the introduction of Twitter Blue, a paid monthly subscription that adds a blue tick to the account and offers additional perks.

Since the introduction of Twitter Blue, people have been buying the blue tick and coexisting with the previously verified accounts.

Before Twitter Blue, the check marks were only given to notable accounts, acting as a mark of authenticity. These accounts are called Legacy accounts, and the blue tick beside their username is called the Legacy Blue Check.

These checkmarks helped users distinguish official celebrity accounts from the thousands of fan pages with the same name. However, this will not be the case after April 20, the official date for the removal of all Legacy Blue Checks. They will have to subscribe to Twitter Blue to keep their accounts verified.

Musk had initially talked about the big change in February 2023 when a user complained about any “Tom, Dick, and Harry” being able to receive a blue mark on the platform. To this Musk replied:
“Legacy blue checks will be removed soon. Those are the ones that are truly corrupt.”

How to get the Blue Checks?

The blue checks can be subscribed to for $8 to $10 per month by pre-existing Twitter users with genuine accounts. However, subscribing to the service does not guarantee verification. Once a user applies for verification, a team of officials will review the account to determine whether it qualifies for the blue tick.

Twitter has outlined the rules for people to review before applying for verification. The checkmark can also be removed by the portal in different circumstances.
