Mario Chalmers Zamboanga Valientes

NBA veteran and two-time NBA champion, Mario Chalmers, is set to take his talents to the Pearl of the Orient Seas, Philippines. In a report made by Alberto de Roa of Hoopshype.com, the 36-year-old point guard will be playing for the Zamboanga Valientes in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL). Valientes confirmed through their social media account that the former teammate of LeBron James in the Miami Heat has already signed a contract under their team. Chalmers will be joining the team shortly for their 2023 ABL campaign. Zamboanga Valientes’ owner Junnie Navarro also shared that he and the whole team are excited about the coming of Chalmers.

“Siyempre sobrang excited kami na makasama ang isang NBA champion. Sobrang laki ang matutulong niya sa amin lalo na sa experience kasi na kasama din niya si Lebron (James). Maraming matututunan ang local players natin sa kanya”

Translated to English: “Of course, we are very excited to be joined by an NBA champion. He (Chalmers) will be contributing a lot to our team, especially since he had experience playing with LeBron (James). Our local players will surely learn a lot from him.”

Mario Chalmers’ contract details

The full detail of the contract was not disclosed by the Valientes. Although it was mentioned he will be joining the team for the 2023 campaign, the terms of the deal weren’t shared with the public. But, if we speculate based on his latest salaries, we can come up with some reasonable amount.

  • During his G-League days, the average salary of a basketball player on any given team is about $37,000. But, when he got called up for a 10-day contract with the Miami Heat in 2021, he earned almost $140,000 in just 10 days.
  • After his stint in the NBA, he played for a team in Italy (Virtus Bologna) where the average salary of an import is around $150,000 – $350,000 USD per year.
  • He then continued his European journey in Greece (AEK Athens and Aris Thessaloniki) where the average salary of a foreign player is about $60,000 – $250,000 USD per year.
  • Lastly, he returned to America only to play in a Puerto Rican league where the max salary for imports is about $125,000 USD per year.

Therefore, we can say that for Mario Chalmers to agree on a deal with Zamboanga Valientes, this Filipino team must have paid him around $100,000 (Php 5.5 Million) to $150,000 USD (Php 8.1 Million) for their 2023 campaign. Again, this is just a speculation and an honest guess.

Throughout his 9-year career in the NBA, Chalmers earned roughly $24 Million. He played as a solid starting point guard during the Miami Heat’s big three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. Playing alongside these three legends, Chalmers was able to acquire two NBA championships (2012 and 2013).

He put up pretty decent averages (in the NBA) of 8.9 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.5 rebounds. Additionally, he was shooting 42 percent from the field, and 35 percent from behind the arc.
