MOSCOW, Idaho – Moscow police revealed on Tuesday that, 4 Idaho College students were killed. It was “an isolated targeted attack” with an “edged weapon”, most likely a knife.

The bodies were of University of Idaho students Eithan Chapin, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Kaylee Goncalves. Founded in an off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho. At around midday on Sunday, November 13, 2022. Moscow police Capt. Anthony Dahlinger told The Idaho Statesman that all four students were considered victims, not suspects

The deaths of a mysterious quadruple homocide

It’s believed the crime happened between 3 A.M. and 4 A.M. Sunday, the Mayor said. The victims were found around noon on Sunday when officers responded to a report of an unconscious person, according to police.

Despite the killer remaining at large, local officials have declared the incident a homicide and a “Crime of Passion” but have made no arrests. Post-mortems were scheduled for Wednesday (yesterday) which will provide insights into the students’ exact cause of death.

The dead students were identified by police and the university as:

  • Ethan Chapin, 20, from Conway, Washington. Chapin was a freshman majoring in recreation, sport, and tourism management and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
  • Xana Kernodle, 20, from Avondale, Arizona. Kernodle was a junior majoring in marketing and a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.
  • Madison Mogen, 21, from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Mogen was a senior majoring in marketing and a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.
  • Kaylee Goncalves, 21, from Rathdrum, Idaho. Goncalves was a senior majoring in general studies and a member of the Alpha Phi sorority.

According to the social media photos, the four students appeared to be close friends. On the day of their deaths, Goncalves, one of the victims, posted a picture to Instagram where she posed with the three other victims. (3rd slide)

In the photo, Mogen, who is wearing an “Idaho” sweatshirt, is sitting on Goncalves’ shoulders, while Chapin wraps his arm around Kernodle.

Based on what they’ve learned so far, investigators view the killings as “an isolated, targeted attack and there is no imminent threat to the community at large,” the Department said.

Kaylee Goncalves’s family released a statement, also on behalf of the family of Maddie Mogen, casting doubt on the police claims. “They were smart, they were vigilant, they were careful and this all still happened,” the statement said. “No one is in custody and that means no one is safe.”

Were the 4 students of Idaho that were killed robbed?

There have been no such details of stealing of anything from the crime location. Mr. Bettge told The New York Times that he believed the killing was a “crime of passion”, and later admitted to another outlet: “We don’t really know what it was.”

The police got the report of the murders when they were called to a house on King Road, near the University of Idaho campus, at 11:58 am on Sunday.

Officers were responding to a 911 call reporting “an unconscious individual“, but have not said who placed that call, whether that person was on the scene when they arrived, or whether that person is a potential suspect.

Almost three days on from the slayings, the victims’ killer or killers still remain at large. No arrests have been made and no suspects named. Police have said the attack was “targeted” but have not confirmed if they have a suspect or suspects in mind.

Conclusion

The University of Idaho has more than 11,000 students and is about 10 miles away from another public land-grant institution, the much bigger Washington State University with about 31,000 students in nearby Pullman, Washington.

Anyone with information about the 4 Idaho college students killed is asked to call the Moscow Police Department at 208-882-2677.
