Oksu Station Ghost or The Ghost Station is one of the most anticipated Korean horror movie releases of April. It is based on a webtoon of the same name and stars N.FLYING’s Kim Jae-hyun and Kim Bo-ra. The story will follow journalist Na-young who crosses paths with station worker Choi Woo-won as they both attempt to investigate the mysterious murders at Seoul’s Oksu Station.

The film is scheduled to release in South Korean cinemas on April 19, 2023. It will take a little longer before it is available for foreign audiences through various content streaming sites. Fans of the Oksu Station Ghost webtoon recently got to see its theatrical poster where a woman is standing on a shabby, dimly lit, and deserted train platform. She looks possessed as she bends back until breaking point but it is hard to know more as her locks cover her identity. The platform also features blood streaking down on the wall which raises curiosity about what caused this scene.

The Mimic follows a family that moves to a remote mountain village as a means to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. However, they soon realize that something in the village is very wrong when their young daughter, Hee-Yeon, goes missing.

Why you shouldn’t watch this alone: The film stars Yum Jung-hwa that scared children regarding education and scores through Sky Castle and depicts the Korean mythology of the Jangsan Tiger. The white fur creature with sharp teeth is said to roam the mountains of Busan and lure people with its wails resembling a woman’s cry. The innocence of the child is the highlight of the movie and shouldn’t be watched alone past midnight.

4) Cinderella

Release date: August 17, 2006

Running Time: 94 Minutes

Cast: Do Ji-won, Shin Se-kyung, and Ahn Gyu-ryun

Cinderella follows Yeon-hee, a divorced plastic surgeon living a happy life with her daughter. However, things take a horrific turn as her patients start to kill themselves in front of her daughter for mysterious reasons. Meanwhile, the answer to the mystery lies in their own basement.

Why you shouldn’t watch this alone: The film features some terrifying gore as it presents a satirical look at the plastic surgery industry and modern beauty standards. It also showcases a new take on the classic Cinderella while bringing the horror close to reality. The dark images are the highlight of the film and shouldn’t be watched alone after midnight.

3) Gonjiam: Hunted Asylum

Release date: March 28, 2018

Running Time: 91 Minutes

Cast: Wi Ha-jun, Park Ji-hyun, Oh Ah-yeon, and Park Sung-hoon

Gonjiam: Hunted Asylum follows a group of YouTubers who decide to explore an abandoned mental asylum that is allegedly haunted. As they reach deeper into the asylum, they begin to experience terrifying things and wonder if they are hallucinating until they realize that they aren’t alone in the building.

Why you shouldn’t watch this alone: The film is based on a real location named Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital situated in Gwanju South Korea, which also featured on CNN Travel’s ‘7 freakiest places on Earth’ in 2012. The said hospital is no longer in existence and the film is shot in a high school recreated with the same floor plan. The highlight of the film is its presentation as a vlog which makes it hard to watch at any time of the day.

2) The Host

Release date: July 27, 2006

Running Time: 119 Minutes

Cast: Bae Doo-na, Song Kang-ho, Byun Hee-bong, and Park Hae-il

The Host follows a family who lives by the Han River in Seoul, South Korea. When a massive and horrifying creature emerges from the river and begins to attack the city, the family must fight against the monster and the government that is trying to cover up the situation for survival.

Why you shouldn’t watch this alone: The film features the Oscar-winning combination of Director Bong Joon-ho and Song Kang-ho. It presents emotional wreckage and amazement with the terrifying monster. The film also features the well-known flair of Director Bong over social commentary which adds to the scary element. The adrenaline-rushing sequences are the highlight of the film and shouldn’t be watched alone as people can sue you for gatekeeping entertainment.

The Wailing follows the story of a police officer, Jong-goo who comes to a village that is suddenly hit by a mysterious disease. He must investigate the strange occurrences as people act violently and in a deranged manner. However, he soon finds himself trapped in a supernatural mystery that leads him to question his own beliefs.

Why you shouldn’t watch this alone: The film is an exemplary cinematic piece for mystery, psychological-thriller, zombie, black magic, supernatural, and epidemic. It ticks all the boxes of horror with excellent acting, directing, and editing. The ending is the highlight of the movie however it shouldn’t be watched alone after midnight.
