Police search for man who left dead fish at Goonies’ house

A notorious and bizarre affair happened when a man left dead fish at the Goonies’ house. The house is situated in Astoria, Oregon, and was featured in the Steven Spielberg classic, The Goonies (1985). This incident is bizarre in itself, however, it also included more trouble.

  • After placing the dead fish, the man stole a vessel from the Goonies’ house and escaped through the Columbian River. Luck wasn’t on his side as a massive wave knocked over the stolen yacht. Moreso, a US coast guard rescue swimmer helped him out through a tough situation that was no less theatrical than a movie.

  • The Astoria police chief, Stacy Kelly shares the police were searching for this man since Wednesday and finally found a lead when one of his acquaintances sent a Facebook video of the culprit. In the video, he is visible placing the dead fish at the Goonies’ house.
  • Following the video, police identified the man as Jericho Labonte. He is a 35-year-old from Victoria, British Columbia. His journey until he reached the Goonies’ house includes more crimes, according to the police reports.

Police arrested the notorious dead fish culprit

Kelly shares further details about the crime with The Guardian. Police weren’t able to identify what kind of fish it was but it was confirmed a local fish. A video circulating online from another person confirmed the report of having taken Labonte fishing. Kelly describes this incident as “an odd 48 hours”.

  • The Astoria Police Department received calls regarding the Facebook video confirming the culprit’s identity as Jericho Labonte. Additionally, a surveillance video shared with the local TV station KGW8 catches the culprit in action.
  • In the video, Labonte approaches the home with a black plastic bag. He removes the dead fish from the bag and places it on the wooden front porch. He proceeds to flip off the security camera and then shoots a video of the house.

  • The video on Labonte’s own Facebook page is consistent with the scenes of the surveillance tape. According to The New York Times, Jericho also shouts the famous line from the film, “Hey you guys!”. However, it isn’t verified if Labonte also performed the famous “Truffle Shuffle” dance.
  • To add to the weird crime, Labonte eventually returned to remove the fish and place adhesive stickers on the security cameras.
  • Coast Guard crews weren’t aware of Labonte’s crimes, so they transported him to the Columbia Memorial Hospital after the rescue. Following his discharge from the hospital, police continued their search. They received many calls from which an eyewitness shared his location at a warming center, where cops arrested him.

Here’s why the man left dead fish at Goonies House

According to Kelly, Labonte has a long rap sheet from his time in Oregon. His charges include thievery, menacing another person, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and criminal mischief. This isn’t all, apparently, there are more felonies against him. This lets us know that Labonte habitually causes criminal mischief and troubles for law-keepers.

  • Upon police’s further investigation, they discovered Labonte’s roots in British Columbia. He had crossed the U.S. border illegally. Canadian police were also searching for Labonte on charges of criminal mischief, harassment, and failure to comply. After the arrest and investigation, local police handed him over to U.S. immigration officials.
