While the memes go on and on, not everyone seemed positive about this sudden change in the BAFTAs. Several hate comments were thrown at DeBose for the performance she did. The award-winning actress deactivated her Twitter account due to the backlash it gets. The show’s producer Nick Bullen addressed this matter.

  • The producer defended the West Side Story star from all the Twitter criticisms surfacing after the performance. In an exclusive interview with Variety, Bullen says that DeBose “put the whole piece together” along with her team. Some Tweets mention how “painful” it is to watch the performance, which Bullen considers “incredibly unfair.”

  • Nick Bullen also shares that they hope to open the BAFTAs with much energy, and DeBose certainly delivered that. He added that perhaps people got used to the “slightly stiff, traditional British, middle-England messaging,” while America has more razzle-dazzle during these shows.
