Although there is no official astronomical word for a Black Moon, NASA has two common definitions for the term. It is the second new moon that occurs in a month. It may also mean the third new moon of a season with four new moons.
This natural phenomenon last took place almost a year ago. Today we can see this new moon again, the Black Moon. This will also coexist with a partial solar eclipse, which is an unusual occurrence. Many locations around the world will be able to see the first solar eclipse of this year.
The Black Moon only occurs occasionally
A new moon is referred to as the moon phase when the Earth-facing side of the moon is completely in shadow. This is as opposed to a full moon, which is the moon phase when the Earth-facing side of the moon is entirely illuminated by sunlight.
The moon passes through the same region of the sky as the sun during the new moon phase, often known as the Black Moon, turning its lighted side towards Earth. All of the meanings associated with the term Black Moon are cyclical in nature and have nothing to do with astronomy.
What is a Black Moon?
According to Space.com, a Black Moon is neither an astronomical event nor a scientific term. It is a common term for a period of numerous new moons.
Since a Black Moon indicates a darker sky, it would be one of the perfect days for stargazers. This facilitates viewing stars, constellations, and deep-sky phenomena such as galaxy clusters and nebulae.
The moon is always “black” in the “new moon” phase. The moon’s dark or unlit side is directed towards Earth during the month when it travels through the same region of the sky as the sun.
When can you see such a phenomenon?
According to the seasonal term, the latest Black Moon of this year will happen on May 19, 2023. According to the calendar month definition, the next Black Moon will occur on December 30, 2024.
Where can you see a moon?
Today’s moon will be invisible, unlike a super-moon, which attracts attention due to its somewhat larger and brighter look. Sadly, this means that this moon will be essentially undetectable. This is because a new moon will be visible only when the Earth’s natural satellite glides into the sun’s glare. However, the western twilight sky may show a thin waxing crescent moon a few nights after the Black Moon, about 30 to 40 minutes after the local sunset.
Was there any Black Moon in 2021 and 2022?
This type of moon is a rather uncommon occurrence, and in 2021 there were none. This phenomenon in 2022 occurred on April 30, a Saturday.
There are normally one full moon and one new moon each month since the lunar calendar almost perfectly aligns with the 365-day cycle of the Earth. It’s common to refer to a second full moon in a single month as a Blue Moon.
According to Time and Date, the Black Moon occurs around once every 29 months.
