Call of Duty will not be releasing a game for 2023. This is a first for Activision as Call of Duty dishes out new releases every year since Call of Duty 2 was released in 2005.
Call of Duty: Vanguard did not meet Activision’s Q4 projections.
The company decided to postpone the 2023 release after Vanguard failed to meet their expectations on how it will perform. Activision executives speculate this was a sign that the company was releasing Call of Duty games too frequently.
Frequent releases have led to the game franchise becoming oversaturated, according to company execs. And with their annual releases, it’s possible that players may choose to play previous releases first before moving on to the next.
Aside from wanting to play previous releases first, Warzone may have also contributed to players not being interested in buying a new CoD game for a while. There is new content brought to Warzone in each update, so it might be overwhelming for players to keep up.
This decision may benefit Activision in the long run.
Postponing the game slated for 2023 will allow developers and the studio involved to take a breather. They won’t be pressured into meeting an annual deadline, and they can take the time to ensure the game’s quality. Fans have given feedback on how Call of Duty’s storylines dwindled over the years, so taking a break may be just what they need.
There will still be a Call of Duty this year. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to Modern Warfare released in 2019.
