A long curse has marred movie adaptations of video games in Hollywood. Recently, the Tom Holland starring movie managed to break free of this curse. The new movie ‘Uncharted’ made new records grandiosely entered into the $139 million earnings mark threshold. This is quite historic, knowing how video-game movie adaptations have fared recently.
The Sony video-game adaptation movie has broken the curse of poorly faring video-game movies at the box office.
Mark Wahlberg and global heartthrob Tom Holland starring movie, Uncharted might have received negative feedback from critics since it was released. However, it has not deterred the film from delivering bombastic box office performance.
Moreover, The strategy adopted for the movie’s promotion worked way too well. With overseas weekend earnings pinned at $55.4 million, the approach to release it internationally quite early was a game-changer. Moreover, the movie will be out in March in China, which is again going to increase the gross income of the film immensely.
Uncharted Movie: The Plot
Directed by Ruben Fleischer, who had previously directed the anti-hero movie, Venom again came back to the big screen with Sony’s video-game adaptation. The film did not adhere to the proper adaptation of the video game but instead produced an adventure flick embedded with plenty of treasure hunts and packed with action scenes. The entire movie eluded old-school vibes.
The movie is a prequel to the video game of Sony, Uncharted. Ahead of its release, the movie’s buzz was been the talk of the town. The film provides the audience with a sneak-peak about the lives of Nathan (Tom Holland) and his older brother, Sam (Rudy Pankow) childhood.
The movie circles around the character’s obsession or fascination with the perseverance to uncover the lost treasure that was hidden perfectly by the crew of Magellans. Magellan’s crew were amongst the first people who successfully circumnavigated the planet earth.
The Uncharted movie rolls in with both brothers attempting to steal the map of Magellan from the museum.
Unfortunately, they were caught. After that, Sam left his brother an ancestral lineage in the orphanage. Fast-forward to fifteen years, Nate becomes an ever-so-charming bartender and a conman who is more than efficient in picking pockets, especially the wealthy.
The movie’s storyline meets as unexpected twists as Nathan meets Victor Sullivan or Sully (played by Mark Wahlberg). Sully introduces himself to Nathan as a treasure hunter; additionally, he claims to be an old acquaintance of Sam. Sully coaxes Nathan to join him to find the lost treasure of Magellan.
Excited at the prospect that Nathan will meet his older brother Sam, Nathan joins hands with Sully. The plot then goes through many twists and turns that portray the exciting treasure hunt journey.
And throughout this journey, many other crucial protagonists (Santiago Moncada – played by Antonio Banderas, and Jo Braddock, played by Tati Gabrielle) are introduced. While the movie’s first half can be quite gripping, the latter half fails to live up to that standard. Furthermore, the character of Tati Gabrielle was enchanting.
The Growing Name in Cinema Universe: Tom Holland
If we stray our attention to the box office performances of the recent movies of Tom Holland, it is easy to decipher that Tom Holland is beginning to grow on its audience and quite severely, might I add. Tom Holland has grown to become the new heartthrob of the cinema world. He has been giving back-to-back hits.
The movie ‘Uncharted’ has been poorly bashed and rated low by the critics. However, the film fared very well despite all of it. Much of the movie’s success can be credited to the chemistry of the duo of Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
The curse of video-game adaptations movies has been in for a very long time.
It is honestly a breath of fresh air to see this curse uplifted. Moreover, this opens up many potential avenues for upcoming video-game adaptation movies and encourages more of the same to be released.
The reviews for Uncharted might have been mixed. But one cannot deny the stellar performances delivered by Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. It seems that this duo is made to create magic on the big screens. Nonetheless, Uncharted is a good watch; moreover, it is a piece of great news for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which releases on 8th April.
