CD Projekt Red had recently revealed information about the map size of Cyberpunk 2077. The devs said the map will be slightly smaller than Witcher 3, however, it will be a lot more denser.
Today, a redditor, Lord Parsifal, dived deep into the information available about various games’ map sizes and compared them to Cyberpunk 2077. He details out in his post how the information available on the internet about Witcher 3’s map size might be wrong considering the fact that the world isn’t as big as what the internet claims it to be. He cites various reasons for the same. He compares the two-lane road in GTA 5 with the distance between the two shacks in Witcher 3 and scales the map accordingly to a 1:1 ratio. The second metric he takes into consideration is the in-game unit measurement, which corresponds to 0.9 meter per unit. Taking all this into consideration, he sums out the size to be around 22 sq km., which is roughly 1/3rd the size of GTA 5’s map.
However, considering the fact that these assumptions were very far fetched and too realistically calculated, he sticks to the original assumption of Witcher 3’s map size, that is, 136 sq km. He then puts all the information he had into action and incorporates it with the Cyberpunk 2077 map model he made. Combining the two, he comes to the conclusion that the map size of Night City will be roughly 120 sq km. When one compares it to the size of Witcher 3, it is slightly smaller than the 136 sq km size, but 1.5 times the size of GTA 5’s 80 sq. km map.
While all this is purely speculation, the amount of work the guy had put into it, and the facts he states to back it up is commendable. Consequently, all of it sounds pretty believable. Considering the fact that CDPR is claiming the game to be a lot denser than Witcher 3, and the fact that it will be bigger than GTA 5, there’s no doubt that the game’s world will have a lot to offer going by the developer’s past reputation.
