One of the things we’re most excited about in Dead Island 2 is the ability to play co-op multiplayer with friends! Aside from the new setting, characters, and new zombie types, getting to play with friends is an exciting way to enjoy what the long-awaited sequel has to offer. In this article, we will explain how co-op multiplayer works in Dead Island 2 and how you can play it once the game comes out. Stay with us!
How to play co-op multiplayer in Dead Island 2
Although it was already confirmed back in 2014, the devs changed things up at a later date. Originally, co-op multiplayer in Dead Island 2 could host up to eight players. However, that all changed over the course of the game’s development.
To somehow make it more feasible and enjoyable for gamers, the devs made the decision of reducing the number of players who can play together.
- Right now, you can play co-op multiplayer with up to two other gamers. This means that co-op sessions in the game can only host a total of three players. We believe that this will make gameplay more balanced since there are six characters you can play as in Dead Island 2.

- Even though Dead Island 2 has a co-op multiplayer feature, the game does not support crossplay. To make up for this, Dead Island 2 allows cross-gen play.
- Although you cannot play with your friends on the Xbox Series X/S if you have a PS5, you can invite anyone you know with a PS4. The same guidelines apply to those on the Xbox consoles or PC.
Here is a quick step-by-step guide on how to access the co-op multiplayer feature in Dead Island 2:
Set up your own lobby
- First things first, you’ll have to progress a bit into the game first. This feature doesn’t instantly unlock as you start the game. After finishing the “Call the Cavalry” mission, players can start hosting or joining lobbies.
- Once you complete the quest, save your progress and go back to the main menu.
- Then, select ‘Continue’ and you now have the option to choose a lobby type. There are three options: Single Player, Public, Invite Only, and Friends Only.
- Load into the game and then bring up the pause menu. From there, choose “Social” and you can start inviting your friends to join your Dead Island 2 multiplayer session.

Join a random lobby
On the other hand, you can always join lobbies created by other players. This is a great option for players gaming with a PS4 or Xbox One as they cannot set up co-op multiplayer lobbies in Dead Island 2. All you have to do is follow the steps below:
- Wait for an invite from one of your friends. It’s important to note that you still need to finish the “Call the Cavalry” mission to unlock this feature.
- If you want to join random lobbies, you can also select the “Join” button from the lobby. Here, you can get teamed up with other players and possibly make some new gaming friends!
Other things you need to know about multiplayer mode in Dead Island 2
Here are a few other things you need to know if you’re looking to play with your friends in Dead Island 2. You can progress through quests in Dead Island 2 with the help of your friends! If you’re feeling stuck in some parts of the story, it’s better to take on the challenging enemies with a little help by your side.

However, there are certain rules to the multiplayer mode in Dead Island 2:
- If you want to game with a friend who is a few quests ahead of you, the game allows this. The only catch is your friend will have to replay the current quest with you and help you finish it.
- You cannot join a lobby that is going to play through a quest you haven’t unlocked yet. Because of this, you will have to look for other gamers who are on the same page as you.

- As for quest progression and how it is affected in multiplayer mode, your progress is automatically saved. If you feel like you want to go back to single-player mode but you’re worried that you’ll have to play through quests you finished in multiplayer mode, there’s no need to worry. You can always switch back to single-player mode from the main menu.
I suspect Dead Island 2 reviews are going to be scattershot so I'll say this: the entire game is beating zombies to death, almost nothing else to it. But it's also the best zombie beat-assery out there. If the look/sound of this clip does it for you, I bet you'll dig it. pic.twitter.com/lX3aE8AkME

- This is also applicable for items you picked up while in multiplayer mode. They will still stay in your inventory even if you exit a multiplayer session and play solo.
Co-op multiplayer gameplay in Dead Island 2 is not only fun, but also useful. If you’re feeling stuck on a particular quest, you can always enlist the help of your friends. Just make sure that they’re only starting the quest or they’ve already finished it.
