FIFTY FIFTY faces plagiarism allegations for Cupid

K-pop girl group FIFTY FIFTY has taken the internet by storm with their recent release Cupid from their first single album The Beginning: Cupid. The song quickly rose to fame on TikTok and Instagram and with it, they became the fastest K-pop group in history to enter the Billboard Top 100. However, according to netizens FIFTY FIFTY’s Cupid sounds very similar to Turkish artist Evrencan Gündüz’s Sen Aşkımızdan and they are wondering if the girl group plagiarized the song.

Following netizens’ debate whether the song is sampled or plagiarized from the Turkish track Sen Aşkımızdan by Evrencan Gündüz. The artist released a video expressing his surprise at the similarity between the two tracks. The Lovin Me singers’ agency has also stated that they are in talks with Cupid‘s producer and will release a statement soon.

After FIFTY FIFTY’s Cupid became viral, many Turkish fans wondered why the track sounds familiar. Later netizens recalled Evrencan Gündüz’s popular track Sen Aşkımızdan. The song is featured on the 2017 album Mevsim Çiçekleri and it currently has 1.9 Million views on YouTube.

Netizens also reached out to Evrencan Gündüz to ask whether he has sold the song to the K-pop girl group’s managing label ATTRAKT. However, the singer replied that he didn’t know about the song and only found out about it from TikTok.

Following this, the singer Evrencan Gündüz uploaded a video on April 27 tagging the K-pop group while reacting to the similarity between the two tracks through his official social media handles. He expressed his confusion in the caption, “FIFTY FIFTY released a great song. Let’s listen to it together 🙂 But it seems familiar from somewhere…”

Following the plagiarism allegations went viral among netizens many defended the Higher singers by stating that copyright doesn’t cover cord progressions and hence the allegations are false.

Many netizens also shared that both the songs have a similar chord progression and melody to Jim James’ song Exploding which was released ten years ago.

 

According to Koreaboo, ATTRAKT shared that they have contacted Cupid‘s producer. They also stated that the producer is living overseas due to which there can be a little delay to confirm but they will release an official statement in the near future.
