Does Mark Zuckerberg have a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu?

Mark Zuckerberg jiu-jitsu Brazilian tournament black belt gold medal win

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg participated in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) tournament and surprisingly emerged victorious with gold and silver medals. On Saturday, the match took place at Woodside, California, in the Bay Area. Mark Zuckerberg showcased his skills and impressed many by representing the Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu team, established and led by experienced Judo and BJJ black belt practitioner Dave Camarillo.

The billionaire shared his achievement on Instagram, expressing gratitude to his training team. Zuckerberg revealed his interest in MMA on The Joe Rogan Experience last year. He mentioned that he had taken up the sport during the pandemic to refocus his attention and engage in physical activity.

Did Mark Zuckerberg earn a black belt after winning the jiu-jitsu tournament?

In his debut Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition, the 38-year-old tech giant showcased his impressive grappling skills and emerged victorious in the Gi and No-Gi categories. The Gi refers to the traditional uniform worn by BJJ competitors, consisting of a loose-fitting fabric tied with a belt.

Mark Zuckerberg achieved a remarkable feat by earning two medals in both the Gi and No-Gi divisions of the white belt master 2 lightweight category. The white belt signifies the initial rank for all BJJ practitioners, regardless of previous experience, as it has no prerequisites. This means that Zuckerberg possibly has the beginner’s white belt for now.

A video shows the 38-year-old billionaire from Facebook trying to pin his opponent to the ground but ending up being pinned himself. After about two minutes, the referee decided to end the match, thinking that Zuckerberg had given up and tapped out.

A frustrated Zuckerberg protested to the referee that there was a mistake in the call. Eventually, the match ended in a draw with a 0-0. Later, a delighted Zuckerberg went on to win gold and silver medals.

Social media reactions to Zuckerberg’s jiu-jitsu win

Many people flooded the comment section of the tech tycoon’s post to express their admiration for his victories. UFC champions Brandon Moreno, Israel Adesanya, and Alexander Volkanovski were among the famous fighters and personalities congratulating Zuckerberg on Instagram.

In recent years, Zuckerberg has been spotted attending UFC events and appears to have formed a friendship with UFC president Dana White.

Other celebrities who practice Brazilian jiu-jitsu

Mark Zuckerberg is not the first influential celebrity to indulge in competitive Brazilian jiu-jitsu on a pro level. Tom Hardy surprised everyone by participating in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu championship in 2022, where he won all his matches.

Keanu Reeves received training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu from Rigan Machado for his role in John Wick 3. Similarly, Robert Pattinson underwent Brazilian jiu-jitsu training with Rigan Machado specifically for his portrayal of Batman in the 2021 film.

Russell Brand has been discussing his interest in Brazilian jiu-jitsu since 2016 and received his purple belt in 2021. Henry Cavill has often expressed his passion for jiu-jitsu on social media, comparing it to a challenging but rewarding experience.
