It’s been a month since the release of Doraemon Nobita’s Sky Utopia released in March 2023. And it’s been over more than just one decade since Doraemon has been a part of many people’s childhood. After having overtaken First Slam Dunk the movie, Doraemon 2023 Film is back to the top spot again.
The 42nd installment in the Japanese animated series Doraemon created by Fujiko F. Fujio is titled Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia. This science fiction adventure film was released on March 3, 2023, and was directed by Takumi Doyama with a screenplay by Ryota Furusawa.
- The film opened in Japan on March 3 and had an impressive debut, selling 542,000 tickets and earning 663 million yen (about US$4.87 million) in just three days.
The story takes place in a utopian world in the sky, where everyone lives happily, and is often compared to mythical cities such as Atlantis. To find this elusive utopia, Doraemon and Nobita embark on an adventure that’s as new to them as it is to the audience.
How The Doraemon 2023 Film is doing in the Box Office
In its fourth weekend, Doraemon the Movie 2023: Nobita’s Sky Utopia (also known as”Eiga Doraemon: Nobita to Sora no Utopia” in Japanese climbed back up to the top spot at the box office, after previously dropping to third place.
- The 42nd installment in the Doraemon franchise sold 322,000 tickets and grossed 392,306,080 yen (approximately US$2.99 million) from Friday to Sunday, bringing its cumulative total to 2.11 million tickets sold and 2,548,879,730 yen (about US$19.47 million) earned.
What is it about?
- Set in a flawless and idyllic sky world where all inhabitants are content, the film draws comparisons with mythical cities like Atlantis or Ryūgū-jō, prompting many adventurers to seek it out.
- In this pursuit, Doraemon and Nobita embark on a quest with the aid of a brand-new gadget introduced in the film, the time zeppelin, which is equipped with a time warp function to aid them in their search for this utopia.
Where to Watch Doraemon Film: Nobita’s Sky Utopia
Unfortunately, the film has only released back in Japan. And was also scheduled for a Viatnamese release in March 25, 2023.
As of now, no further details are available as to when it will be released internationally. There is also no chance of it being in any streaming services anytime soon. Although Funimation might get the distribution rights, after which Crunchryoll can possibly follow suit.
Other than this, With a cumulative total of 8.60 million tickets sold and 12,457,928,510 yen (approximately US$95.27 million) earned, the First Slam Dunk movie has achieved great success. It currently holds the 26th position in Japan’s list of all-time highest-grossing films, as well as the 12th spot on the list of highest-grossing anime films.
