An intoxicated driver hit and killed a Taylor Swift fan who was returning home from the singer’s concert in Houston. According to the Houston Police Department, the tragic accident happened early on Saturday, April 22, on the Southwest Motorway.
According to the police, Jacob Lewis, 20, and his sister were returning from Swift’s ‘Eras’ Tour at NRG Stadium. Unfortunately, their car broke down on the Southwest Motorway.
When Jacob was helping his sister start the car, the drunk driver couldn’t control his vehicle and ran into them. This collision killed Jacob.
Jacob Lewis dies in car accident when returning from Taylor Swift concert in Houston
Jacob Lewis was returning home with his sister, when the Buick LaCrosse they were in stopped. Lewis had exited the vehicle and was pushing it from behind while his sibling was at the wheel.
This is when the 34-year-old driver, identified as Alan Bryant Hayes, smashed into their car with his Volkswagen Beetle from behind, according to the KPRC-TV, the television station in Houston, Texas.
While accompanying him at the time, April Bancroft, the sister of Jacob Lewis, suffered minor wounds. Jacob, however, was declared dead at the spot. According to the police, Hayes, who has a history of drunken driving, left the scene.
April revealed to ABC 13 that she saw her brother die violently. “I immediately ran to him and called 911,” she said. “And that was it.”
Lewis’ father, Steve, claimed that before leaving the scene, Hayes stepped out of his car and assisted April in pulling her brother out from beneath the car.
“You know, to make it worse, the driver got out, helped my daughter get my son out from under his car, saw what had happened and got in his car and left,” Steve told the police.

The tow truck driver who saw the accident, followed Hayes to the 4500 block of Caroline Street, where he got out of his car and fled on foot. The Houston Police Department immediately arrested Hayes and said he was “taken into custody after a foot pursuit” on Caroline Street.
According to jail records, Hayes was accused of driving while drinking and failing to stop and offer aid. He was arrested with a $90,000 bail.
According to ABC 13, Hayes was previously charged with DWIs in 2014 and 2015.
Just hours prior to the deadly accident, pictures posted on social media showed Lewis and his April attending Swift’s concert.
“Knowing we had that experience as our last memory is something wonderful to hold on to, and I will forever,” Bancroft told the local news outlet.
According to his mother’s Facebook post, Jacob Lewis was accepted into Sam Houston State University to study musical theater. He had passion for performance art. He was also about to start his acting career on professional theater stages by performing in high school productions. Lewis was a Taylor High School alumni.

Following Lewis’ passing, other Taylor Swift fans, also known as “Swifties,” came together to help his family. They started a GoFundMe page to cover his funeral expenses with $13 contributions in Swift’s favorite number’s honor. The page had raised more than $93,000 as of Monday night.
