Every FromSoftware game has a variant of the Moonlight Greatsword. These are some of the most powerful weapons to have, but obtaining them is no easy task. If you’re interested in pursuing this weapon, here’s a step-by-step guide. A warning, as some of the content you’ll need to go through will be a challenge, and you may not be strong enough to progress right away.
After obtaining Torrent, go to the Church of Elleh at night, where you’ll meet the NPC Renna.
She’ll give you a Spirit Calling Bell, which will unlock summoning Spirit Ashes. You can also get the ashes from the Twin Maiden Husks if you don’t encounter Renna right away.
When you’re ready, you’ll need to clear Carioa Manor. It’s located north of the Academy and contains some challenging enemies. You’ll need to defeat Royal Knight Loretta to progress the quest. After defeating her, head outside and get to the Three Sisters area.

You’ll encounter Glintstone Adula, which you can fight or avoid. In the middle, you’ll see Ranni’s Rise. Head to the top of that tower.
Renna will be here and reveal her true identity as Ranni.
She’ll give you a quest. If you accept, she’ll tell you that you need to get an item from Nokron, The Eternal City. You can skip to the next section if you’ve defeated him. If not, continue reading:
- Ranni will direct you to Blaidd hanging out in Siofra River Bank. He’s next to the Hallowhorn Grounds, and he’ll direct you to sorcer Seluvis.
- From there, you’ll go back to the three towers in the Three Sisters. Go to the southmost tower, and you’ll find him. He’ll direct you to the sorceress Sellen.
You’ll then visit Limgrave and go to the Waypoint Ruins past the Highway Bridge. You’ll see a Mad Pumpkin Head guarding a cellar. Defeat it, and talk to Sellen. She’ll then tell you that you need General Radahn before accessing Norkon.
After defeating Radahn, you’ll see a meteorite drop from the sky on top of Nokron, opening the area.
Head there through the Siofra River and follow the new path at the Ancestral Woods Site of Grace. You’ll eventually encounter a chest that contains the Fingerslayer Blade.
Deliver the blade to Ranni, and she’ll give you a Carian inverted Statue. It will open the way to the Divine Tower of Liurnia. Head back to Renna’s Rise, and you’ll see that you can now enter one of the previously barred towers. A teleporter there will lead you to a new unlocked Ainsel River area.

Once you arrive there, you should see a coffin. Loot it, and you’ll get a miniature Ranni doll. Once you get to the Site of Grace, you can speak to it. Continue talking to it, and you’ll eventually discover that it’s Ranni. She’ll then assign you a new quest.
You’ll need to defeat the Baleful Shadow at the Ainsel River. Once you beat it, you’ll get a Discarded Palace Key. It unlocks a chest in the Academy Library. You’ll need to defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon for access. Once you open the chest, you’ll get the Dark Moon Ring.

Head back to the area where you fought the Baleful Shadow, and you’ll see a lift heading downward. You’ll open the way to the Lake of Rot which has an annoying poison effect. Head to the end of the Lake, and on the left side, you’ll see a magical coffin. Rest inside, and you’ll have to fight Astel, Naturalborn of the Void.
After defeating it, you’ll gain entrance to a new area. Head up the lift, and you’ll open the way to Liurnia: the Moonlight Altar. There are many powerful monsters here, so tread cautiously.
Go to the Cathedral of Manus Celes, where you’ll see a hole. Head down and follow the path inside. You’ll eventually see Ranni again, and you can place the Dark Moon Ring on her finger. Speak to her, and later a loot drop should appear. You’ll then get the legendary armament.
