Empire State Building light up for the Eagles – Here’s why

Empire State Building Light up for the Eagles

Heartbreaking. Treacherous. Ridiculous. These are just some of the words spat to the face of the Empire State Building after they intentionally lit up for the Philadelphia Eagles in Green and White. The iconic Manhattan building resides just a few miles away from their very own NFL team, the New York Giants. What’s even more interesting is that the Giants’ arguably biggest rival is no other than … the Eagles. But, why did Empire State Building illuminate the Eagles’ colors?

Hacked? Definitely not. The Empire State Building administration lit up for the Eagles in honor of the team winning the NFC Championship in the NFL Playoffs.

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-7. They won the NFC championship and are now advancing to the Super Bowl. Last weekend, the Eagles also ended the New York Giants season in a blowout victory (38-7). The narrative that the Giants had a devastating loss against the Eagles is just the tip of the iceberg.

Manhattan’s beloved skyscraper pulling up the Green and White colors put the cherry on top and created a buzz on the internet. However, although intentional, this was not intended to anger the Giants fans. According to the Tower Lights Calendar featured on the official website of the Empire State Building, the colors of the building on January 29 would be in honor of whoever wins the NFC and AFC championship. Philadelphia Giants (Green) won the NFC while the Kansas City Chiefs (White) wins the AFC division.

Although the tower’s administration explained the situation, New Yorkers still found it outrageous and an act of treason – a bit exaggerated, yes – due to the fact the Eagles are the biggest rival of the Giants. Moreover, the celebration of NFC champions infuriated most fans because they are being humiliated in their hometown. Although it shouldn’t be a surprise to everyone since this is not the first time the building celebrated the Eagles. Last 2018, Empire State lit up for Philadelphia after beating the New England Patriots in a Super Bowl game.

What is the Tower Lights Calendar?

The Empire State Building has been around since 1931 and held the record for the tallest building for more than four decades. Truly, it has become an outstanding trademark of, not just New York, but of the whole United States of America.

Since its foundation, the humongous structure has fascinated New Yorkers with its bizarre light display. The tower lights frequently change to commemorate various national and world events. The tower’s next schedule of lighting will be on February 14 (Pink Heartbeat Lighting), in celebration of Valentine’s day.
