Epic Games Teams Up With Microsoft After Legal Battle Against Apple

Recently, the lawsuit between Apple and Epic Games reached its climax. Apple has to remove its regulation on third-party payments. Epic Games also had to pay a compensation amount for its breach of contract. Now, it seems like Epic Games has a backup plan – teaming up with Microsoft.

  • Epic had asked Apple to let its developer account back on the App Store, which Apple refuse to do. This was also supported by the court, which stated that Apple was within its legal rights to do so. While Epic has filed an appeal in court, Microsoft has now become involved in the matter, has been increasingly vocal about the issue.
  • Epic is seeking to block Apple’s retaliation in collaboration with Microsoft, stating that it is “an unlawful effort to maintain [Apple’s] monopoly and chill any action by others who might dare oppose Apple”.
  • Microsoft has filed a legal brief that supports Epic Games and its right to continue software development for iOS. Kevin Gammill, the executive support for developers in Xbox console, signed off on the brief, and has stated that “Epic Games’ Unreal Engine is a critical technology for numerous game creators including Microsoft,” and that “Apple’s discontinuation of Epic’s ability to develop and support Unreal Engine for iOS or macOS will harm game creators and gamers.”

Microsoft x Epic Games

In addition, as a part of the company’s policy to allow third parties wide availability on its digital sales platform, Microsoft Corporation has stated that Epic Games Inc and Amazon.com Inc will be made available on the Microsoft Store on Windows. Microsoft has also stated that they will not be taking a cut of transactions that take place on the payments system of the third-party storefronts.

This can be seen as a move to compete with Apple by providing contrasting policies. A statement by Microsoft also said, “It’s also about making sure our business terms are fair and help promote innovation.”
