About the film

Everything Everywhere All At Once was released in March 2022, and distributed by indie cinema powerhouse A24. Directed by the Daniels of Swiss Army Man fame, the film’s cast features Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Stephanie Hsu.

  • The film revolves around a Chinese American immigrant mother who discovers that she can travel through different universes while being audited by the IRS.
  • Although Everything Everywhere All At Once might seem like an adventure to save the multiverse, the film mainly focuses on mother-daughter relationship drama

Box office and critical success

The film earned more than $100 million from an estimated shoestring budget of $15-25 million. It garnered a multitude of accolades from film critics and enthusiasts around the world.

  • It was appreciated for effectively exploring themes such as existentialism, generational trauma, and Asian-American identity. On a technical level, the Daniels knocked it out of the park with game changing visual effects and stunt choreography

  • The screenplay was originally written for Jackie Chan, but the writers felt a female protagonist felt more organic and relatable. That is how Michelle Yeoh landed the role.

The indie film’s breakout success is attributed to its low-key crew and budget. Studios like Marvel splurge hundreds of millions of dollars on VFX and hire tens of thousands of people to do it. And their final output has been just above average of late.

However, Everything Everywhere All At Once had a core VFX team of just five people and still managed to produce a visual masterpiece that has taken the Oscars by storm.
