Demon Slayer: Who created it and when?
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba is created by Koyoharu Gotouge, a Japanese manga artist. She started writing Demon Slayer in 2015. This made her work the ninth best-selling manga of all time.
Early life
Gotouge was born in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan on May 5, 1989. She has always been extremely passionate about art and started drawing very young.
Gotouge grew up watching much shonen anime and always wanted to be a mangaka. However, she didn’t like publicity at all and started drawing manga using a pen name to maintain anonymity.
Her parents always encouraged her passion for art and helped her to overcome all obstacles.
Career
In 2013, Gotouge debuted with her first one-shot work manga Kagarigari. Followed by Kagarigari, she also worked on many one-shot works namely Monju Shiro Kyodai and Rokkotsu-san. Both of them were published in 2014. Gotouge created Haeniwa no Zigzag, which was published in the 2015 Weekly Shonen Jump.
These one-shot works got considerable success, but it wasn’t all she was aiming for. Tatsuhiko Katayama, her editor, advised her to create a manga series that would be extremely relatable and gain immense success. This is when Gotouge came up with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba, which is now a famous anime series on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
Demon Slayer’s success
Demon Slayer was first published on Shonen Jump from February 15, 2016, to May 18, 2020. From then she didn’t have to look back. Fans all over the world loved her extraordinary creation. By 2021, Demon Slayer sold around 150 million copies all over the world in circulation including digital copies.
Soon enough, Ufotable thought of making it into an animated series that is loved by all. The Mugen Train arc is one of the most loved seasons when released and got incredible acclamation from critics and audiences.
Awards and honors
Koyoharu Gotouge received the second Kodashna’s Noma Publishing Culture Award in 2020. She was awarded for her impeccable skill in Reinventing Publishing Styles.
Gotouge was also was included in Times as a Phenoms for most influential people in February 2021. She is the first Manga artist to receive such acclamation.
Around March 2021, Koyoharu Gotouge won the Newcomer’s Award in the fine arts category from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Fine Arts Recommendation Awards. She also won a grand prize from Comic Division at the 50th Japan Cartoonists Association Awards.
