Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, was first released for the Wii U back in 2014. It is now going to get a free next-gen upgrade! The survival horror game is going to be available on the PS 4, PS 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and will be released on the 28th of October.

Koei Tecmo has confirmed by a tweet that the Fatal Frame installation will be getting a free upgrade for owners of the Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5. Even if players buy the game to play on old-gen consoles, they can upgrade the game at any time.

Xbox Series X|S owners can easily upgrade their game through Microsoft’s “Smart Delivery” system. In contrast, PS5 owners will be facing a number of convoluted mechanisms that have been put in place by Sony while claiming their upgrade.

  • Although there is no mention of what the next-gen upgrades will consist of, it is expected that there will be a performance boost and a 4K resolution output. It is expected that Koei Tecmo will be announcing more details of the upgrade soon.
  • There has been no mention of a physical release; the official Project Zero website has listed Priestess of Black Water as a “digital-only”. This does not look well in case the game should be delisted at any time in the future.

  • The re-release of Maiden of Black Water seems to be a second chance for Koei Tecmo; with the producer of the game stating that they hope for a new chapter for the series with the upcoming re-release.
