An abundance of Favors or side quests in God of War: Ragnarok will keep any warrior busy as they journey through the Nine Realms. If you’re the type of warrior looking for extra loot before declaring Ragnarok, or you aim for 100% completion in the game, this guide is for you! For warriors running into trouble trying to complete this Favor in God of War: Ragnarok, we have you covered. Keep reading to know where to find these Hel Tears in the latest God of War title.
How to unlock Hel Tear side quest in God of War: Ragnarok
Hel Tears automatically appear in your game as soon as you finish the “Reunion” chapter in God of War: Ragnarok. For a refresher, this chapter takes place after you finish “Unleashing Hel”. Now that Atreus is back in the Realm Between Realms and reunited with Kratos, they must work together to close all the Hel Tears caused by Garm.
After closing the first Realm Tear that appears outside Sindri’s House, you need to go to five other locations where there will be more Hel Tears for you to take care of. It doesn’t matter who Kratos’ companion is as you finish this Favor in God of War: Ragnarok. Right after successfully closing the Hel Tear at Sindri’s House, the spell used by Freya is passed on to Atreus.
You can also take care of this side quest in God of War: Ragnarok after the events of the game’s main story. It does not have any effect on the main storyline. When you complete this Favor, you earn an achievement and valuable loot for defeating the enemies trying to make a mess of the Realms.
Where to find all Hel Tear locations
In God of War: Ragnarok, you must close six Hel or Realm Tears to finish this side quest. Luckily, two locations are part of the main missions in the game, so you’ll only have to go to four other locations. Here is an overview of where all six Hel Tears are:
- Sindri’s House (main mission)
- The Gleaming Bale, Helheim (main mission)
- Aurvangar Wetlands, Svartalfheim
- The Southern Wilds, Vanaheim
- Well of Urd, Midgard
- The Strond, Alfheim
1. Sindri’s House
This is when you’ll be introduced to a Hel Tear in God of War: Ragnarok. As soon as Atreus returns to Sindri’s House, there will already be a tear in the Realm, which Freya and the others are taking care of. Players will eventually switch back to Kratos, and all you have to do at this point is fight off the enemies. Meanwhile, Freya and Atreus are teaming up to take care of the Hel Tear that appeared.
2. The Gleaming Bale, Helheim
The second Hel Tear that’s part of the main story in God of War: Ragnarok is found in Helheim. Kratos and Atreus cannot allow Garm to wreak havoc across the Realms, so they need to take the Hel-Hound down before it causes too much trouble. On your way to Garm, you’ll find a Tear where most enemies are covered in Frost. The quickest way to take them out is using your Blades of Chaos.
3. Aurvangar Wetlands, Svartalfheim
In Svartalfheim, you will need to use the Mystic Gateway you first used at the start of God of War: Ragnarok. Use the boat docked at the beach directly before the Mystic Gateway and paddle your way forward. The Hel Tear should be somewhere to your right.
If you’ve already cleared this area before, all you need to do is freeze the geyser with your Leviathan Axe and then jump over to the other side.
4. The Southern Wilds, Vanaheim
For the next Hel Tear in God of War: Ragnarok, make your way back to the realm of Vanaheim. There will be another Mystic Gateway you can use but make sure you teleport to The Southern Wilds area in this realm. You’ll spot the Realm Tear after arriving at the Mystic Gateway.
For this Realm Tear, make sure to keep an eye on your companion while they work on getting it closed. The enemies in this area focus more on interrupting your companion than attacking you. Be on your guard as the toughest enemy in this location will be a Traveller. When dealing with this kind of enemy, we found it easier to defeat them by parrying and spamming them with abilities to break their armor quickly.
5. Well of Urd, Midgard
If you find yourself back in Midgard after dealing with the other two Hel Tears, you can find another one here. Remember where you went with Freya during the “Word of Fate” main story quest? Make your way back to the Well of Urd, where Garm has created another tear in the Realm.
Go past the Nornir chest and squeeze your way through the crack in the wall. You’ll easily spot the Hel Tear in this location but be warned, the enemies here are pretty troublesome to deal with. Make sure to have your companion fire arrows at the enemies attacking you from above.
6. The Strond, Alfheim
Another Hel Tear near a Mystic Gateway is in the realm of Alfheim. Look for the Gateway in The Strond and teleport there. The Realm Tear should be in front of you. Interact with it and fight another tough enemy while your companion focuses on closing the tear.
Receive a Frozen Flame after completing
After you find and seal all six Hel Tears in the Nine Realms, you’ll be rewarded with a Frozen Flame. This item is used to upgrade your Leviathan Axe, making it a more well-rounded weapon against tough enemies in God of War: Ragnarok. You will also complete the Favor called ‘Hel to Pay’, recommended for players wanting 100% completion of the game.
