The most unique PC gaming platform CD Projekt’s Good Old Games, better known as GOG, was started in 2008. It is the only platform that offers DRM-free games. Users can simply buy the game and download the game’s files directly and it doesn’t require any launcher. In this manner, they would have a reason to draw players to buy their product. But currently, GOG is in great trouble. GOG is currently bleeding money.
This past quarter saw a net loss for GOG of $1.14 million, bringing the total loss of the past three quarters to around $2.21 million versus a $1.37 million profit this time last year. Despite the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, hasn’t exactly done many sales for the company.
GOG’S Approach to Tackling Loss
The company isn’t in the mood to continue such losses. In order to tackle this issue, the company is going to focus on “handpicked games” with its unique policy of DRM-free games. Moreover, to bring the company into profit line according to Nielubowicz, some GOG developers will be transferred to other parts of the company.
“Regarding GOG, its performance does present a challenge, and recently we’ve taken measures to improve its financial standing. First and foremost, we’ve decided that GOG should focus more on its core business activity, which means offering a handpicked selection of games with its unique DRM-free philosophy. In line with this approach, there will be changes in the team structure.”
– Piotr Nielubowicz, CD Projekt CFO
Lastly, he concluded that the introduction of these changes in the organization will allow GOG to focus more on its core business and improve its financial effectiveness in 2022.
