GTA: More Mods Removed Amidst GTA Remaster Rumors

GTA More Mods Removed Amidst GTA Remaster Rumors

Mods have become an important part of gaming in recent times, if not the most ethical part. Grand Theft Auto is one such gaming franchise that has seen a bucket load of mods since its inception. These mods range from GTA V mods like Festive Surprise and Redux to area-specific mods like GTA Punjab. One such very popular and ambitious mod was GTA Underground and to everyone’s disappointment, it has been terminated.

The Announcement

GTA developer Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive is on a killing spree for any and every GTA mod out there. In the past few months, it has taken downloads of mods for the GTA Franchise and has sued a bunch of developers as well. It has sent multiple takedown notices to get old 3D-era GTA mods and source ports removed from the internet.

As a result of this increasing hostility against the mod developers, Dkluin has officially ceased the development of GTA Underground. They announced the same on Reddit a few days ago along with a video that credited everyone involved in the production. They thanked the fans for their constant support for the past 6 years in the video titled “The End”.

“Due to the increasing hostility towards the modding community and imminent danger to our mental and financial well-being, we officially ceased the development of GTA: Underground and have taken all of the downloads offline”, stated the dev team on Reddit

GTA Underground is just the latest in the long line of victims of this widespread takedown. Earlier this week, Take-Two went after the reverse-engineered version of Grand Theft Auto 3.  Before that, they sued the creators behind reverse-engineered source ports of Vice City and GTA III. The reason for this hostility against the mod dev community is unknown but might be related to the launch of GTA remasters coming soon.

GTA Underground

GTA Underground was a very ambitious project which aimed at merging all of the previous GTA maps into one humungous environment. It was also going to bring other cities from non-GTA games developed by Rockstar into San Andreas. GTA Understand in its most basic sense was a mod for GTA San Andreas but it was much more than that.

The mod included a lot of original work including NPC Traffic, Assets, Airport Travelling, Multiplayer, Train Travelling, Stores, and whatnot. It was supposed to come out with:

  • Over 300 weapons from GTA: San Andreas, GTA: III, GTA: Vice City, Manhunt, Manhunt II, Bully SE, and even custom ones made from scratch.
  • All of the vehicles from the 3D era universe, all in San Andreas style, and custom vehicles for custom maps.
  • The in-game maps from GTA: San Andreas, GTA: III, GTA: Vice City, Manhunt, Manhunt II, and Bully SE.

You thought we were kidding when we mentioned it was ambitious? No! We are going to miss out on a lot of stuff with the discontinuation of GTA Underground. On the brighter side, GTA remasters may just be able to stand good on their promise and give the fans something to savor after 8 years on absolutely nothing.
