As the wizarding world gears up for the long-awaited release of Hogwarts Legacy, let’s take a look at all the confirmed spells from the Harry Potter open-world RPG. The 34 confirmed spells in Hogwarts Legacy could be divided into different categories based on where they are extensively used and for what purpose. Let’s rank all the confirmed spells from Hogwarts Legacy.
1st: Unforgivable Curses
The three Unforgivable Curses are some of the most iconic spells from the Harry Potter franchise, even in the books and films. This shows how powerful they are and their potential impact on Hogwarts Legacy.
Avada Kedavra kills your enemies instantly. Crucio makes your enemies writhe in pain and curses them. Imperio turns your enemies into temporary allies. All three Unforgivable Curses are obtainable during Sebastian’s Side Questline.
2nd: Damage Spells
These spells from Hogwarts Legacy are all about dealing direct damage to your opponents. They can be unlocked by completing different assignments.
- Harry’s signature spell Expelliarmus disarms the opponent’s wand and damages them. Bombarda is an explosive spell that deals heavy damage.
- Confringo is a long-range bolt that damages on impact. Diffindo slashes objects and enemies from a distance. Incendio is a short-range fire-based attack.
3rd: Force Spells
In Hogwarts Legacy, Force Spells may not be as directly damaging as Damage Spells but when used in certain combinations, they have quite an impact.
- For example, the object-summoning spell Accio can also bring enemies closer. Using the Descendo spell right after this would slam the enemies to the ground and damage them heavily.
- Depulso is a spell that repels objects and enemies whereas Flipendo flips them around. These four spells can be put to best use in combinations against your enemies in Hogwarts Legacy.
4th: Control Spells
As the name suggests, Control Spells put your wizard in complete control over an enemy or an object. The spells control their physical state, which is highly useful in combat.

Arresto Momentum slows down your enemy and gives you more time. Glacius freezes enemies whereas Levioso (not the same as Wingardium Leviosa) levitates them. Transformation spells can be used to transform objects to finish puzzles.
5th: Essential Spells
All the above spells in Hogwarts Legacy are useful only if you get the basics right. Essential spells are all part of the Main Quest. They are crucial to your progress in the game.
- Stupefy (stuns enemies), Protego (protects you from spells) and Petrificus Totalus (binds enemies completely) are some of the most essential spells in combat.
- Spells like Alohomora that grant access to locked rooms or Revelio that highlights interactive targets are necessary for story progress and exploring the open world. Other basic spells like the Basic Cast and Ancient Magic Throw are also quite useful.
6th: Utility Spells
Wingardium Leviosa is one of the most popular spells from the Harry Potter franchise thanks to Hermoine’s pronunciation. In Hogwarts Legacy, it is a utility spell that can levitate an object.
Other utility spells include Lumos for light, Reparo for repairing objects and Disillusionment to help you blend with the surroundings.
7th: Transfiguration Spells
These are mostly specific to the Room of Requirement. Transfiguration spells can conjure new items, vanish existing items or alter their physical form.
8th: Beast Grooming Spells
You can get these spells by completing the Main Quest – The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and the Loom. The Beast Petting Brush, Beast Feed and Nab-Sack are used to groom and feed beasts that live around Hogwarts.
Hogwarts Legacy is scheduled to be released on February 10, 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. What is your favorite spell from the Harry Potter franchise?
