“I just felt shaking like an earthquake”: Neighbors share horrific experience from NYC parking lot collapse in lower Manhattan

parking lot collapse in NYC

A parking lot in lower Manhattan, NYC collapsed on Tuesday afternoon, April 18th. The incident claimed the life of one garage employee and left five others injured. Four of the injured employees were taken to the hospital, while one refused medical attention.

The incident occurred around 4 PM at Ann Street near Nassau Street. According to reports, the roof of the building caved in on the third floor, causing the entire structure to collapse to the ground. While the area surrounding the garage has been evacuated, the fuel inside the crumpled cars continues to pose a threat.

Neighbors living in the adjacent building to the garage stated that the incident left holes in their walls. Pace University is located right across from the garage and students attending classes witnessed the entire ordeal. The university will conduct classes remotely for the next few days. Hinako Tanakamaru, a student at Pace University told the news:

“I just felt shaking like an earthquake”

Many in the NYC financial district neighborhood felt the tremors of the collapsing parking lot

Sandy Imhoff, a resident at the building adjacent to the garage told CBS2:
“The wall just started giving way, and I had two heavy, free-standing closets that were near the wall, and they went over and they weigh a ton. Then all of a sudden, all the bricks were inside my place.”

Her building shared a wall with the four-story parking lot. She explained that the noise of the falling building was ” loud, rumbling,” that sounded like “burying, just crashing down.”
Imhoff also explained that they couldn’t figure out what was happening, since they are in a habit of listening to loud construction noises, and their building used to shake during the use of heavy machinery in adjacent buildings.

Her neighbor, Christine Iu chimed in by saying:

“There’s been cracks in our building because of the freight elevator shaking our building.”

They also worried about the garage employees. Iu said:

“We’re also very close to our garage guys. That’s part of our neighborhood, and our neighbors who also look out for us as well as we look out for them, so I’m concerned”

Both women escaped the building safely.

Mike Kurylo lives in the same neighborhood. He said that the collapse sounded like thunder. On witnessing the falling building, he grabbed his son and ran out of his house. He shared:

“The building started to shake, it was a prolonged shake, and I looked out of this window and that’s when I saw the debris or smoke rising up and I screamed to my son and said, let’s get out of the building right now. We grabbed shoes and we just ran down the stairs”

Jim Slattery, who parked his car in the collapsed garage told news channels that he found out about the incident from his wife. Slattery parked his car in the garage on Tuesday before the incident occurred. He said:

“My phone was blowing up. My wife was calling me, and friends were calling me. Finally, my wife did get ahold of me, and she says, ‘Did you go into that parking lot?’ I said yes. She said, ‘I think it collapsed.’ Because she was hearing on the news. And sure enough, friends are calling me, same thing, and then I was told by staff upstairs, the parking lot, there’s a collapse in it.”

The NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development has hired a private company to clean up the debris left behind by the crash. Meanwhile, forensic engineers will have thorough research on the reason behind the collapse. Currently, the reason behind the collapse is being blamed at age of the building, lack of maintenance, and overloading of weight.
