Is Hogwarts Legacy dying? Active player count (March 2023)

Is Hogwarts Legacy dying Active player count (March 2023) - Featured

Ever since Hogwarts Legacy was announced, fans of the Harry Potter series and gamers were more than thrilled. In the months leading up to the game’s release, fans have been hyping it up despite all the controversies surrounding J.K. Rowling. The hype proved to be real when Hogwarts Legacy managed to become the best-selling game so far this 2023. It was further proved by how many players logged in at launch. However, some are worrying that Hogwarts Legacy may be dying because of its low player count.

Low player count this March sparks up talks of Hogwarts Legacy dying

One of the aspects pointing to the possibility of Hogwarts Legacy dying is its low player count. According to Steam Charts, the game hit an all-time peak of 527,652 players on February 19, 2023. Unfortunately, less and less players started logging into the game after that.

Is Hogwarts Legacy dying Active player count (March 2023) - Chart

  • As of writing, there have only been 54,327 users playing the game on March 24, 2023. This is the lowest player count Hogwarts Legacy has seen and it’s only been a month after the game’s release.

  • Although the game offers a lot of content for wizards and witches to enjoy, it seems a lot of players have either already finished the game or got bored of it. Unlike other single-player RPGs that offer stuff like DLCs or Expansion Packs, there are no plans to include any of that yet in Hogwarts Legacy.

Is the game dying?

From the looks of it, Hogwarts Legacy is far from dying and being called a dead game. Although the drop in the Steam player count is quite alarming, there is no reason for people to call this a dead game. A lot of players are already claiming that this is one of the best Harry Potter games ever released, so that alone is saying something about the game’s success.

  • On Twitch, people still tune in whenever a streamer broadcasts their Hogwarts Legacy gameplay. It’s far from being a dead game as some players are starting to claim.
  • Given how successful the game was at launch, we’re sure Avalanche Software already has plans to keep the wheels turning. Although they have initially turned down the idea of adding DLCs to the game, there’s a high chance they would backtrack on this decision.
  • Adding DLCs to a breakout game like Hogwarts Legacy would be a win-win situation, both for the devs and the players. Avalanche, hear us out! We’re waiting for that Quidditch DLC that could still happen!

This isn’t the last we’ve seen of Hogwarts Legacy

Aside from the devs already teasing a sequel, there’s no telling what the future has in store for Hogwarts Legacy. We’d like to believe that the game will only go nowhere but up from here. DLCs are a great way to get gamers playing your game again, but player count could still increase through other ways.

  • The active player count on Steam could still go up in the months to come this year. Things like new mods or Hogwarts Legacy going on sale may contribute to this, so there really is no way for us to say that the game is dying.

  • For wizards and witches on consoles, there is no definite way to determine how many active players are still there. Nonetheless, more players will be able to get their hands on Hogwarts Legacy soon.
  • On May 5, 2023, the game releases for eager players on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Although the delay may have already spoiled players on these platforms, that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t want to experience the magic themselves. The same goes for players on the Nintendo Switch as the game releases in July for them.
