Is It Time to Include Curry in the GOAT Conversation?

With his 4th title in 8 years and finally winning the elusive NBA Finals MVP this year, Steph Curry (What). Despite being dubbed as “The Greatest Shooter of All-Time”, Curry wasn’t in any top 10 greatest players list, let alone get a nod to be included in the Greatest Of All-Time (GOAT) debate. Now that he finally completes his resume, is it high time to include Steph in the GOAT conversation?

This season, Steph solidified his case as the best shooter there ever was by taking over Ray Allen as the 1st on the All-Time 3-point made leaders list.

Besides that great feat, it’s also insane to see Curry do the following things even at the age of 34:

  • All-Star Game MVP
  • Hit 16 threes in the 2022 NBA All-Star game (the most 3-pointers made in history)
  • Won the Magic Johnson Western Conference Finals MVP
  • Won his first-ever NBA Finals MVP
  • Top 10 in MVP Voting
  • Lead the Warriors to the 3rd seed in a very tight Western Conference
  • Averaged 32 points per game in the Finals against the “best defensive team” in the league

Should Curry be in the GOAT conversation?

In his 13 NBA seasons, Steph was undoubtedly one of the best to ever step foot on the hardwood. Although he didn’t start immediately as a superstar material, the Chef evolved into an unguardable beast in the latter part of his career.

Let’s take a look at some accolades in Curry’s resume:

  • 2x NBA MVP (the only unanimous MVP, 2016)
  • 4x NBA Champion (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022)
  • 1x NBA Finals MVP (2022)
  • 8x All-Star
  • 2x Scoring Champ
  • 8x All-NBA
  • 2009 All-Rookie 1st Team
  • 2x NBA 3-Point Contest Champion (2015, 2021)
  • Member of NBA’s 75 greatest players
  • And many more

The list goes on and on and on. While Curry’s list of achievements is unfathomable, is it really enough for him to be included in the debate about who’s the best?

The Verdict

As legendary Steph Curry is, most analysts do not consider him a top 10 player before his 4th ring and Finals MVP. Now that he adds more to his bag, that same list could be re-evaluated and maybe they could add Curry in the future.

But, to be included in the GOAT discussion is even more complicated. We’ve heard debates about whether Michael Jordan or LeBron James is the GOAT. People even fight over it. Sometimes people like to throw in the names of Kareem, Wilt, Kobe, and Bill Russell.

Honestly, in our own opinion, Curry deserves to be in the same sentence as MJ, LBJ, and Kobe. If we are going with stats, rings, impact, dominance, influence, and game-changing abilities, Steph Curry definitely has it all. With Curry proving that he can win without Kevin Durant, it wouldn’t take long for him to be part of that conversation. Some are even asking – “Is Steph better than KD?”. While that is a very interesting take, we’ll have to deal with that at another time.
