K-drama: Five Reasons to Stream SNSD Sooyoung’s ‘Not Others’ | Where to Watch

Not Others K-drama starring SNSD Sooyoung and Jeon Hye-jin

The K-drama land is always growing and reviving with interesting scripts and characters. Recently, we have noticed writers’ pens that are honest and unbending to sugarcoat things (even in romantic dramas). This change is refreshing, and one of the K-dramas that pushes the boundaries of prime-time television is ‘Not Others,‘ starring SNSD Sooyoung and Jeon Hye-jin.

This Genie TV original is based on a webtoon of the same name (Strangers) by Jung Young-rong. Not Others revolves around a mother and daughter duo that goes through some unexpected situations and makes even more unexpected decisions to manage them.

The drama recently made headlines for its NSFW content in the first two episodes. The drama is also listed under an A certificate (19+ rating), but the content is honest to its comedy genre. It doesn’t include much explicit content besides mentioning s*xual pleasure and undergarments.

However, you wouldn’t want to watch a K-drama to laugh about undies, right? So, below are five reasons why you shouldn’t skip Not Others and what truly makes it unlike other K-dramas.

Note: The article included opinions of the writer and mild spoilers of the first two episodes.

Five reasons to watch Not Others K-drama

5) The 19+ rated content

When we read the ’19+ rating,’ we must prepare ourselves for some explicit s*xual, violent, and gory content but for Not Others K-drama, it means a comedy. The drama opens with a scene from the past where Kim Eun-mi (Jeon Hye-jin) is visiting the beach with her daughter Kim Jin-hee (Sooyoung).

  • The single mother who had her daughter during high school throws flirty glances at the passersby while her daughter sticks by her side so ‘eomma wouldn’t play with others.’ This sets the show’s dynamic, which comically touches upon female s*xual needs.
  • It doesn’t shy away from showing a woman pleasuring herself (discreetly) and opens the drawers (literally) of a part of women’s life that is often locked away from televisions. The characters of Not Others are independent, bold, and shameless, making it a refreshing watch.

4) Teenage pregnancy and middle-age woes

The K-drama Not Others follows Jeon Hye-jin’s character Kim Eun-mi, who became pregnant during high school and ended up raising her daughter alone. While the delinquent behavior of her youth, which appears in flashbacks, might make the audience feel icky, it also highlights the mechanism of Eun-mi’s character.

  • Furthermore, it makes the audience wonder how challenging it must have been for the vivacious and chaotic Eun-mi to raise her daughter on her own. The drama also touches upon the short span of youth spared for women in a society that starts earlier than necessary and ends just as early.
  • Kim Eun-mi, who shouldered the responsibility of raising a child in her youth, is unable to pursue any romantic desires in her 40s. She is quickly placed under the title of ‘ajumma‘ with a grown-up daughter. The show also shows the loneliness of middle age in the journey of Eun-mi.

3) The mother-daughter dynamics

While Eun-mi is feminine and passionate, her daughter, Jin-hee (Sooyoung), is somewhat tomboyish and cool-headed. These differences don’t stop them from bonding with each other. They often hang out together, go on movie dates, and take turns wearing the household pants.

  • One of the highlights of the K-drama is that although Jin-hee has a drastically different approach to love and life than her mother, she is never ashamed of herself and never criticizes her antics. In return, Eun-mi also never questions the approach of Jin-hee and doesn’t force her to ‘lighten up.’
  • This mother-daughter dynamic that might remind the audience of Gilmore Girls is refreshing in K-drama land. This is also one of the major reasons you should try K-drama Not Others.

2) Sooyoung’s character Kim Jin-hee

The first two episodes of Not Others seem to focus on the character built up of a single mother and physiotherapist, Kim Eun-mi. Due to this, SNSD Sooyoung’s character, which is bold, defiant, and responsible, will develop further in upcoming episodes.

  • Jin-hee is also a passionate police officer who rolls crime into the plot. Her journey and dynamics at her job with her co-workers, including the male lead Eun Jae-won (Park Sung-hoon), is something that audiences can explore in upcoming episodes.

1) More chaos and love line

The synopsis of Not Others K-drama is described as the story of a careless mother and cool-headed daughter living together without countermeasures. With two strong female leads, the drama will explore more unexpected situations.

  • On the other hand, the two male leads, Eun Jae-won and Park Jin-hong (Ahn Jae-wook), are yet to establish their characters. The drama will surely get more eventful with unexpected twists and chaotic dialogues that will leave the audience in fits of laughter.

Not Others is available to stream on GenieTV, Rakuten Viki, and Viu, with two episodes released. So, tune in tonight for powerful performances and panty-full fun.
