Kena: Bridge of Spirits – Who Is Kena?

We’re just a week away from exploring the magical world of Bridge of Spirits. This calls for an in-depth look at the game’s protagonist, Kena. Who’s Kena, what’s her story, and what are we chasing in the game? Here’s everything you need to know.

From all the trailers and gameplay clips we’ve seen so far, we know that Kena is an adorable little girl whose character design reminds me of Disney and its characters. She’s fun, curious, and extremely lively.

Josh Grier, COO at Ember Lab, the developers, spoke to TrueTrophies regarding Kena where he said:

“While crafting an original world, story, and protagonist, each aspect often begins to affect the others. In the beginning, we knew we wanted to tell a coming of age story about a young Spirit Guide, but we soon began to ask ourselves how her experience level affected gameplay and story.”

More Than A Novice Spirit Guide

Kena is soft-spoken and a kind soul, just like her voice actor Ayu Dewi Larassanti. Kena is her debut role but she is no stranger to performance. Her mother, Emiko, is a professional voice actor who’s also her coach for Kena. Her family is all musicians and dancers who perform Gamelan, a traditional ensemble of music in Bali, made up predominantly of percussive instruments. Ember Lab has worked closely with them for Kena: Bridge of Spirits and its score.

According to Grier, the team started developing Kena as “a more novice Spirit Guide”, but as development progressed, they realized that she could be much more than that. “While not a master, Kena begins the game with strong abilities and knowledge, but lacking experience,” said Grier. “She still has a lot to learn, personal growth, and reflection to do. When the themes, plot, world, and character all start to blend together and influence each other positively, that’s when we know we have the right balance.”

Everyone I know in the gaming industry is more than excited for Kena and we can’t wait to get our hands on it on September 21st. Kena: Bridge of Spirits will be out for PS5, PS4, and PC (via Epic Games Store) on September 21.
