The Loki Season 2 ending presents the God of Mischief with a glorious purpose, but it also raises questions about the future of Tom Hiddleston’s character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Throughout much of the Season 2 finale, Loki’s actions are focused on repairing the TVA’s Temporal Loom, a daunting task due to its design solely to safeguard the Sacred Timeline. In a selfless act, Loki destroys the Loom, taking control of the branching timelines to enable free will for everyone, setting himself on the multiversal throne.
The final image of the Season 2 ending is of Loki, alone, surrounded by the sprawling branches of the multiverse, preserving the existence of all beings across time and space. While Loki is indeed alive and well, there’s a sense of finality to his story, leading to uncertainties regarding his MCU future or the possibility of a Loki Season 3.
Did the Loki Season 2 Ending Tease a Possible Third Season?
Unlike Loki Season 1, which confirmed the existence of a season 2, there’s been no official confirmation of a third season. While it’s conceivable that Loki could make a return in an upcoming Avengers film, like Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars, this remains unverified. There might be a path for a Loki Variant to reappear in a future MCU project, such as young Loki joining the Young Avengers. Nevertheless, the season 2 finale could very well mark Tom Hiddleston’s final performance as Loki. However, in the realm of superheroes and comic books, the unexpected is always possible, and Marvel may have tricks up its sleeve to resurrect Loki. As of now, Marvel has not declared when or if Loki will make a return.
Loki’s transition is all marvel needed to do in order to keep me seated.

Executive producer Kevin Wright also suggested that the Season 2 ending would close the book on the series but teased the God of Mischief’s return to the MCU. “We felt pretty strongly, all of us involved, that Season 2 was about closing that book but that there are many other books on the shelf for this character and for this world,” he said.
Is This The End for Loki, God of Mischief?
Loki has managed to evade death on multiple occasions in the MCU, from faking his demise in Thor: The Dark World to using the Tesseract to escape capture and impending death in Avengers: Infinity War. Hence, it’s fitting that his ending isn’t about death but eternal existence as a god, albeit one spent in solitude. Loki’s deepest desire, from his introduction in the first Thor film, was to be loved, which he believed could be achieved by becoming a ruler. The Season 2 ending grants him the throne he longed for but not necessarily the love he sought.
Instead, Loki’s sacrifice involves an eternal guardianship of the multiverse, showcasing his affection for his friends. In episode 5 of season 2, Loki yearns for his friends and to escape loneliness. However, by the finale, he grasps the painful truth that he can’t have both his friends and their salvation. In an act of profound selflessness, Loki chooses to save his friends, highlighting his remarkable character evolution from the self-centered Asgardian prince to a god who sacrifices his happiness for the love he holds for his companions. At one point, he even tells Sylvie he doesn’t want a throne although this has been what he was working on in his past appearances in the MCU. Although it’s heartbreaking to watch, fans also saw it as confirmation that Loki understands what has been important to him all along.
The selfless act parallels Iron Man’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, except Loki doesn’t meet his demise. While Loki remains alive and technically capable of a return in the MCU, the Season 2 ending provides a fitting and poignant sendoff if it indeed marks his last appearance. After all, many would argue that the God of Stories can be revisited at the End of the Time and fans are hoping that Mobius will not give up on trying to reconnect with his long friend. Perhaps there’s a story to be told again in the future, but it won’t be Marvel’s priority for now.
