The final episode of Loki Season 2 saw the God of Mischief ultimately destroying the Temporal Loom. But was the destruction necessary to save the TVA and the Sacred Timeline? Is there a possibility that the Loom could remain intact as Loki created a new way to bind the multiverse together?
The Temporal Loom was undoubtedly the Heart of the TVA as it maintained the Sacred Timeline. However, Loki Season 2 saw the Loom starting to unravel after the death of He Who Remains in the previous season finale. Despite HWR’s claims that the Loom is a failsafe, Loki ultimately decided it wasn’t enough to protect the TVA and the other branched timelines. This was why he decided to step in and dismantle the Loom and replace it with something more efficient.
Loki Season 2: Was Destroying the Temporal Loom a Good Idea?
In Loki Season 2 Episode 6, Loki finds himself transported back to the instant just before Sylvie is about to slay He Who Remains. He Who Remains reveals a critical secret: the Temporal Loom serves as a fail-safe mechanism, designed to protect the Sacred Timeline by erasing all its branching timelines via overloading. He suggests that Loki can save the Loom by eliminating Sylvie, a proposal Loki firmly rejects. Seeking guidance, Loki consults with Mobius and Sylvie at different points in time.
[SPOILERS]
The fact that He Who Remains foresaw the future into the Temporal Loom collapsing is RIDICULOUS—making Loki go through hundreds of years of hell to travel BACK to this specific moment. If this variant of Kang is this sinister, imagine the main version. WOW. pic.twitter.com/mpLrNqOMqG

The finale of Loki was a monumental task for the filmmakers, and they had to ensure the destruction of the Temporal Loom carried the gravitas it deserved. Tom Hiddleston’s emotional performance played a pivotal role in achieving this, complemented by stunning visual effects, strong direction, and a captivating score by composer Natalie Holt. Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead provided insight into the key elements of the finale.
“One thing you’ll actually probably notice in this sequence is — and this is us just trying to honor Tom’s performance so much — the camera, it does get away from him a little bit, but the camera very rarely gets more than a few feet away from him,” Moorhead said. “It’s always, like, right in front of him, right behind him. It’s very experiential to Tom — and, of course, our ensemble — but there’s only a few shots that would be called pure wide shots, meaning it has no point of view, it has nobody with the camera.”
Will Loki Return After Loki Season 2?
The emotional impact of Loki‘s Season 2 ending extended far beyond the show itself and holds significant implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Loki’s role in taking control of the multiverse, symbolically represented by Yggdrasil, the World Tree, suggests that he may have an indefinite off-screen presence within the MCU, giving Tom Hiddleston an easy exit from the franchise if desired.
The conclusion of Loki Season 2 has sparked numerous theories about its impact on the MCU’s future. Some speculate that a new villain for Avengers 6 may have been introduced, while others suggest that Marvel’s heroes are being repurposed as new versions of the Infinity Stones. The latter theory is supported by the alignment of specific heroes’ powers and colors with the Infinity Stones, such as Loki’s green time-controlling abilities and Wanda Maximoff’s reality-bending powers matching the Reality Stone.
Ultimately, Loki’s actions may have stabilized the multiverse, allowing for the forthcoming conflict with Kang to unfold without complications in the Avengers’ next chapter. The finale’s emotional depth and broader implications have undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the MCU’s narrative and future storytelling possibilities.
So what are the chances that we’ll get to revisit Loki again in the future? There is little doubt that fans want to see more of the character as the MCU hurtles forward with new storylines. In the meantime, the God of Stories is exactly where we know he will be.
For now, Loki has not yet been renewed for a third season. There are speculations that the series is meant to conclude in two seasons but fans believe that there are more stories to explore in the MCU. In the meantime, all six episodes of the second season are now streaming on Disney+.
