A Mortal Kombat dev has hosted an online poll asking fans if the next project they want is a Marvel vs DC game. Could this online poll mean something else? Is NetherRealm Studios, the team behind Mortal Kombat, gearing up for a Marvel vs DC game?

For years, fans of NetherRealm Studios have been asking for a Marvel vs DC fighting game but it’s still not happening. Now that the online poll has ended, it’s no surprise that the option for a Marvel vs DC game came out on top.

Fans have been asking for a Mortal Kombat-style fighting game but with Marvel and DC characters

Marvel and DC are known to be two of the biggest names when talking about superheroes or comic books. Previously, the two companies already had a crossover back in the 90s much to the delight of comic book fans.

But with the rising popularity of fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Injustice, it’s only natural for fans to ask for a Marvel vs DC video game collaboration. Ed Boon, the creator of Mortal Kombat took to Twitter to get some insights from his followers.

Boon hosted an online poll that had fans choose from four options. The online poll had Boon ask his audience, “What do YOU want to see from NetherRealm studios next?”

Much to the surprise of his followers, Boon included two options that had Marvel in them. According to the poll, you can vote for either a third Injustice, a Marvel game, a Marvel vs DC one, or the next Mortal Kombat game.

  • After the voting on the online poll closed, the option for Marvel vs DC won against the other options.
  • 40.9% of the nearly 162,000 users who voted want a Marvel vs DC game from the studio responsible for Mortal Kombat.

Is a Marvel vs DC game even possible?

Back in 2019, Boon didn’t shy away from revealing that he talked to Marvel about a game. But since then, nothing came from it. Fans are still trying to figure out what Boon and Marvel talked about for a potential game.

The DC part of a potential Marvel vs DC fighting game isn’t the problem since Warner Brothers owns NetherRealm Studios. The company didn’t shy away from making sure DC characters are making a mark on the video game community through Injustice 1 & 2.

But obviously, fans want something new to play with and a Marvel vs DC game might hit the sweet spot. How awesome would it be to watch Batman and Superman battle it out with Iron Man and Captain America?

Right now, NetherRealm Studios needs to set another meeting with Marvel if they want to make this project possible. Although there are other fighting games out there that feature Marvel characters… it would be neat to see Marvel and DC characters fight against each other.

What we can do for now is wait for any update from NetherRealm Studios or any other Mortal Kombat dev about this project. Who knows, maybe Marvel will consider it if the demand for this type of game is high.

If this does push through, which Marvel character are you pitting against someone from DC? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
