The finale of the first season of Marvel Studios’ “What If…?” left us with a nail-biting cliffhanger. So, we are now left wondering – What if… there is a second season? Well, yeah, technically there is a second season in this animated anthology series derived from the comic book series of the same name. The project was given the green light last year, November 12, 2021. In this article, we will be talking about the possible release date as well as other speculations regarding What if…? Season 2.
All About What if…? Season 2
Release Date
A new season was confirmed by Marvel and Disney+ last year and as informed by executive producer, Brad Winderbaum, the studio is planning to release a new season of What If…? every year thereafter.
Not to shake anyone’s trees, there is no conclusive data yet as to when the second season will drop. But, don’t get too sad, the director of the series, Bryan Andrews, revealed that Season 2 episodes have already been written. With that, we believe we will be seeing it very soon.
Also, if you remember, the debut of the first season aired in August 2021. Hopefully, we get the second season at around the same time.
Episodes
Season 1 was supposed to be a ten-episode series but was cut short (9 episodes) due to the pandemic.
The next season will also be the same. A 9 or 10 episode featuring various alternate outcomes (or the multiverse) wherein every single decision might change the course of a certain universe.
Possible Characters Returning
- The Watcher and Superior Ultron (Plus Sinister Strange and Black Widow)
The final two episodes of the first season showed how strong Superior Ultron could be if he did win the war. Everyone saw how capable he was of destroying a whole universe. Even after The Watcher broke his oath by interfering, he still got beaten badly by Ultron who seemed to have broken the fourth wall.
It’s really bad when you ask for help from a guy (i.e. Sinister Strange) when things get out of hand (pun intended). Obviously, we will be seeing them again in Season 2 because Ultron needs to be killed asap! That dude is scary as hell!
- The Avengers
Most of the stories in the What If…? comics revolved around The Avengers. It’s safe to say we will be seeing some members of the team returning (as well as future members) in season 2.
- Howard the Duck
The beloved duck in MCU is not the most powerful nor the most influential, but he deserves to shine again in the upcoming season. No questions asked!
Possible Marvel Character Appearances (Ones That We Want to See)
- The Illuminati
After a very short (and brutal) screen time in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Illuminati deserves more than just getting shredded into pieces (sorry Reed Richards). Fans would be more than satisfied if we get to see this underground band of heroes in the second season. And, please, try not to kill them off immediately this time Marvel Studios!
- America Chavez
What If…? is not just sketches of alternate realities, it is the multiverse itself. By that, a multiverse is not complete without the multiversal-jumping superhero, America Chavez. Honestly, Xochitl Gomez did well in her MCU debut in Doctor Strange 2.
As a result, she definitely deserves her own show at least. But, before that, she can surely reprise her role in the What If…? series.
- The Eternals
A group of powerful entities who we found out was just – androids. We really need to see an episode about them, just to clear things off. They’re connected to Thanos, Starfox, and even to the mutants. Also, as part of MCU’s phase 4, they’re more likely to re-appear in this animated anthology series than the others.
- X-Men
Hey, you can’t blame us if we want to finally see X-Men in the MCU. You saw Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, right? At least give us some What If… stories about them, just to stir things up for an MCU debut. Maybe we could get an introduction to the Secret Wars? Hopefully.
