In Michigan, U.S.A, there is a mysterious illness going on this month in dogs. This illness has been killing many dogs around the state. There are more than 70 dogs died in Otsego County and Clare County combined. As per the Clare County Cleaver, there are other similar reports in northern and central parts of Michigan too.

The reports show dogs having the same symptoms of lethargy, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and appetite loss. Most of the affected dogs are young and unvaccinated. There’s also no certain breed only affected by this illness as it hits different kinds of dogs.

This illness affecting dogs has been identified by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (MSU VDL). It was confirmed to be the canine parvovirus. However, it could also be a new strain of the virus.

What is this parvo-like illness and is there a cure for it?

The parvo-like illness
  • According to Dr. Kim Dodd from MSU- VDL, “This situation is complex because although the dogs displayed clinical signs suggestive of parvovirus, they consistently test negative by point-of-care tests performed in clinics and shelters.”
  • With dogs showing the symptoms of the parvovirus but turns out to be negative. As this could be a new strain of the virus. Moreover, the doctors from MSU VDL are finding out about this and the reason why the tests show negative.
