NBA Suspends Ja Morant

In the dynamic world of professional basketball, where athleticism and skill captivate millions, few players have ignited as much intrigue and controversy as Ja Morant. From his breathtaking dunks that defy gravity to his razor-sharp court vision, Morant’s rise to stardom has been nothing short of remarkable. However, behind the dazzling highlights and fan adulation lies a trail of controversies and scandals that have both puzzled and fascinated NBA enthusiasts. In this gripping timeline, we delve deep into the superstar’s latest controversies and scandals on and off the court.

September 2022: Ja rolls with an entourage to a mall after his mom gets into an argument with an employee

This story actually resurfaced earlier this year after the alleged assault case became known to his fans. In the same month as the assault case against a 17-year-old high school kid, Ja Morant had another alleged sour encounter in a public place.

Ja Morant’s mom, Jamie, reportedly had a dispute with a mall employee. There were rumors that Ja brought some reinforcements while showing up at the establishment. The basketball star was accused of harassment and threatening the mall’s security guard. However, no charges were pressed and nothing more happened.

September 2022: Ja allegedly assaults a 17-year-old high school basketball player while playing a pickup game in his Memphis home

According to a report made by The Washington Post, in July 2022, what was supposed to be a fun-filled evening of basketball turned out to be a disaster for the high schooler. The 17-year-old basketball player who will not be named for safety purposes, was deemed a star in his school.

According to people who knew Ja Morant, the NBA all-star likes to host pick-up games on his gated basketball in his Memphis mansion. During a play where the young man was guarding one of the best athletes today, tension started arising. Ja Morant threw the ball so hard into the boy’s chest that he obliged by throwing the ball just as hard to Morant. In an unexpected fashion, the ball “slipped Morant’s hands” and ended up in his face.

It was at that moment that Ja and his confidant started punching the 17-year-old.

According to a report by the teenager, Morant punched him in the head and jaw “12 to 13 times”, while his friend, Davonte Pack, started giving blows “4 to 5 times” to his side. But, the altercation did not end there. As soon as the supposed victim wanted to leave the vicinity, the Grizzlies guard proceeded to go back inside the home. However, he allegedly returned and “came outside with his gun” which was tucked in his waist, according to the boy.

The high schooler and his mother filed a lawsuit against Morant and Pack last September. The case is hidden from the public and the investigation is still ongoing. Meanwhile, Ja Morant’s agent Jim Tanner claims it was just an act of “self-defense”. They believe that the unnamed high school kid “swung first”, making it a threat to the NBA player. Tanner also said that these are just “unsubstantiated rumors and gossip” made by people who want to take Ja Morant down.

September 2022: Ja and his men showed up in Houston after Ja’s sister gets into a scuffle with another high schooler during a volleyball game

According to a police report obtained by TMZ, Ja Morant’s family was investigated by the Germantown Police Department after an altercation between the Morants and a high school student. After a girls’ volleyball game at Houston High School (Tennessee) where Ja Morant’s younger sister (Teniya Morant) currently attends, a ruckus took place between Teniya and a fellow unnamed male high schooler.

As told by the witnesses, they have been arguing and witnesses heard them call each other a “b-tch”. Shortly after, the Morants, Ja, Jamie (mother), Tee (father), and Ja’s daughter as well as some of Ja’s male crew came to the gym and looked for the student Teniya quarreled with. Jamie Morant allegedly shouted to the stands “Which one of ya’ll called her a b-tch?”, as told by some witnesses.

The cops responded to the altercation after receiving a call and tried to calm the situation. They barred Jamie from entering the stands by saying “You can not come upstairs and confront the students and they did not need to make a scene at the school.”

January 2023: Ja Morant, his dad, and his bodyguards reportedly argued with Pacers players after the game and even pointed a laser at the Pacers’ bus

Ja Morant alongside his father Tee Morant and some of his bodyguards allegedly had an altercation with some Indiana Pacers players in January.

After an argument during the Pacers and Memphis game on January 29, Ja’s associates, including his close friend Devonte Pack, reportedly made a scene right after the game. Reportedly, Ja’s friends pointed a laser gun into the Pacers’ bus while the two teams were on their way to leave the premises.

The case was reported, but no police report was filed. Meanwhile, NBA spokesperson Mike Bass confirmed the league’s investigation, however, he couldn’t corroborate that anybody was threatened with a weapon.

March 2023: Ja’s first gun video on IG live

Hours after losing to the Denver Nuggets, Ja Morant was seen partying in a nightclub in Colorado via his IG Live. In the video, the two-time All-star can be seen shirtless while rapping along to the background music. Everything was harmless until Ja flashed what seemed to be a pistol.

Ja Morant ignited another fire in his already long list of controversies with this reckless action. But, this will not be the last time Ja will do this on the internet.

March 2023: Memphis suspends Ja Morant and then he goes into counseling

NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement in the same week after the gun video: “We are aware of a social media post involving Ja Morant and are investigating”. According to the Memphis Grizzlies, they are willing to suspend or fine Ja Morant if proven guilty of wrong actions. He was indeed suspended for eight games by the NBA.

During his time off with his team, Ja underwent counseling, getting therapy sessions, did Reiki healing, and learned anxiety breathing exercises.

April 2023: Extremely underperforming in game 6 of the first round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs

The second-seeded Memphis Grizzlies surprisingly lost to a 7th-seeded Los Angeles Lakers who just came out of the Play-In tournament. The supposed “fine in the West” meme definitely did not age very well.

In the first round of the 2023 playoffs, Ja Morant and the Grizzlies were eliminated by LeBron James and the Lakers. Despite being considered the best young core in the NBA, the Grizz fell short in the postseason. But, what’s intriguing here is how awful Ja Morant played during the elimination game (game 6).

Aside from losing by 40 points, Morant only scored 10 points on 3 for 16 shooting. He was “criminally underperforming” during that time.

May 2023: Ja’s second gun video on IG live

On May 14, in one of his usual IG live streams, Ja Morant and his friend were just vibing to some NBA Youngboy music. Everything was cool and innocent until suddenly, Ja Morant got hyped and flashed his gun (again). His colleague quickly removed the focus to the Grizzlies’ point guard, but many people had already seen it. As quick as wildfire, the disturbing video reached millions of fans and haters alike, creating waves on the internet.

Thanks to his actions, Morant is gaining a lot of backlash and hate comments. Some fans are furious, thinking he still hasn’t learned his lesson. Some, however, aren’t taking this incident seriously. Regardless, it will be a tough NBA career for Ja Morant moving forward.

May 2023: Ja Morant posts cryptic Instagram stories and then deletes it

Morant is once again the highlight of NBA rumors with his deleted ominous Instagram stories. In each story, Ja gives a message to each of his family members (mother, father, and daughter) and a final note saying “bye”. Fans, analysts, and online investigators quickly realize what the possible meaning of Ja Morant’s cryptic IG posts is.

Many believe that he is just asking for help and that he should seek professional help to bounce back. Meanwhile, others think that NBA had just given Ja Morant a massive suspension. But, right after these cryptic posts went viral, the police made a welfare visit to check Morant’s status.

Later on, it was confirmed that the young basketball superstar is just taking time away from social media.
