Keep your eyes closed, but your ears open. Bird Box: Barcelona continues the heart-pounding and anxiety-driving horror film Bird Box (2018). In this film, the story brings us to the heart of Spain, on the rural streets of Barcelona. Similar to the first installment, Bird Box: Barcelona features the “creatures” that have infested the whole planet as well as humans who survived after seeing the entities without dying called “seers”. The movie had a similar ending to the first one, and it seems that it has concluded the series. But, could there be more we should be looking for? What’s next after Bird Box: Barcelona?
What is Bird Box: Barcelona all about?
Netflix’s Bird Box: Barcelona is a spin-off movie that follows the journey of Sebastian (Mario Casas), an engineer, who had the chance to become a “seer”. In his mind, his daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard) tells him to become the shepherd to the sheep, pertaining to letting others see the creatures. He begins to join random groups and slowly brings them out and exposes them to the creatures. He then forces them to see these monsters. Anna keeps telling Sebastian that he is saving their souls and he believes it because he always sees a ball of light descend into the skies after his victims succumb to the creatures by killing themselves.
While Sebastian is battling his mind, he comes across another group. The imaginary Anna, as usual, keeps telling him to “save” them ergo kill them. But, when a child in that group named Sophia (Naila Schuberth) reveals she knows a sanctuary up the mountain called Montjuïc, all the other members decided they should go there. One by one, they fell to the hands of the creatures mainly because of Sebastian’s doings. His motives were unclear at this time and one of the members, Claire (Georgina Campbell) only realized that Sebastian has already seen the creatures after she found out that he can see through his goggles. Thankfully, Sebastian finally has a change of heart and neglects what Anna is telling him. He then sacrificed himself and saved Claire and Sophia, allowing them to reach Montjuic.
Is there a cure?
In the final scenes of Bird Box: Barcelona, we saw that the military has been experimenting with using the blood of a seer as a possible cure for immunity. However, we also saw that it was a failure, knowing that the lab rats have killed themselves too.
The first film, Bird Box (2018), does not tackle whether or not there is a cure. It was set in the United States and the majority of the scenes were taken four years after Bird Box: Barcelona. That being said, we could believe that no one has found a cure and is not close to creating one yet.
What’s next after Bird Box: Barcelona?
Both films had beautiful endings since the main characters survived and were led to a sanctuary where they can be safe. Away from the creatures and thriving with a community they can co-exist without fighting for survival. It took five years before Bird Box was continued and we don’t know yet if Netflix is picking this franchise for more films in the future.
However, if they are going to do so, it would be interesting to see the origins of this creature. We know they can think and will take the form of “your worst fears, your deepest sadness, or your greatest loss”. But, we really don’t know what they are or where they are from. Many believe they are alien species since we saw in a scene in Bird Box: Barcelona that “they traveled a thousand years”. In Bird Box, they believed it is some sort of supernatural being, “the end of us” or an apocalypse. It would be great to see how these creatures came to Earth and how they worked their way into the minds of human beings.
