Obi-Wan Kenobi: Will Darth Sidious / Palpatine Return?

New rumors have surfaced about Darth Sidious / Sheev Palpatine, a character who’s been shadowed by the events of the Star Wars films. Will we see him in Obi-Wan Kenobi?

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series will premiere on Disney+ this May. Numerous characters from the prequel are ready to come back; others will make guest appearances.

Will Palpatine Return?

Palpatine or Darth Sidious may have a part to play in either the Obi-Wan Kenobi or Andor (Disney+), which is a spin-off of Rogue One. Star Wars aficionados and conspiracy theorists may have concocted this theory.

Interestingly though, Ian McDiarmid, who portrayed Palpatine / Darth Sidious, has made recent remarks that seem to support it. It all began with an interview he gave to Metro in which he said:

“I think I have to accept that, thanks to my ungrateful granddaughter, my annihilation was finally final. [But] Of course, ]Darth] Vader is back in the new [Obi-Wan Kenobi] television series, so I suppose it’s not impossible that one day his mentor might be discovered once again skulking in the shadows.”

According to another interview provided at the Imperial Commissary Collectors Convention, this was a comment that was met with a lot of surprise from fans. Ian McDiarmid indicated that he had some connection to Obi-Wan Kenobi or Andor when he was asked.

This has spawned several interpretations.

No one is predicting that Palpatine will play a significant part in any series, unfortunately. However, Rupert Friend, the actor who portrays the Grand Inquisitor, indicated that fans should keep an eye out. He added that we’ll be getting surprise appearances and easter eggs in the upcoming season. Ian McDiarmid’s hint about Palpatine’s presence may be a response to either of these ideas, but it would play no significant part.

There will be a Star Wars Celebration from May 26 to 29 in the United States. Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on May 27th, and we’ll be able to watch one episode every week for the next month.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will be played by Ewan McGregor, Darth Vader by Hayden Christensen, while Owen Lars by Joel Edgerton will be reprised for the occasion.
