One Piece 1088 finally drew the curtains on the events at Hachinosu revolving around Koby’s rescue. Koby and the other Marines who were at Hachinosu are now safe, but the same cannot be said for Garp. Following the ambiguous conclusion of Garp’s confrontation with his former protege, fans have been wondering. Is Kuzan trying to save Garp like how he saved Saul?
Saul and the Ohara Incident
When the World Government caught wind of the Ohara scholars’ research into the Void Century and the Poneglyphs, they sent a Buster Call to destroy the island of Ohara. As then-Vice Admiral, Kuzan was conflicted about following the World Government’s orders to kill innocent civilians.
- However, he helped Nico Robin escape Ohara by freezing a trail through the ocean for her to follow.
- Kuzan didn’t extend the same level of generosity to Jaguar D. Saul, who was another Marine Vice Admiral who was supposed to be involved in the Buster Call, or so it seemed.
- Initially, Saul was portrayed to be dead after being frozen by Kuzan. But a few chapters ago, Saul was seen in Elbaf, fully wrapped in bandages.
- Kuzan isn’t someone who’d be careless enough to miss a mark. This means he must’ve intentionally let Saul escape during the Buster Call.
Garp vs Blackbeard Pirates
When it came to the clash between the Marines and the Blackbeard Pirates at Hachinosu, Kuzan showed no intention of holding back against any of his former comrades, especially his former instructor Garp.
- One Piece 1088 finally showed us the conclusion to this fight where we see the Blackbeard Pirates surrounding Garp as he’s impaled by Kuzan’s icicles.
- However, we are yet to get any actual confirmation of Garp’s demise.
- Garp was fully capable of regular, uninterrupted conversation even when impaled and his official status has been declared to be ‘Missing’ rather than dead.
- This implies that somehow Garp made it out of Pirate Island, at least alive if not unharmed.
Did Kuzan save Garp?
Garp might be strong, but he is long past his prime. Escaping an island under the control of Blackbeard Pirates when some of the most powerful Commanders of the crew were present would definitely require some sort of external assistance, even for the Hero of the Marines.
- This, combined with the fact that both Nico Robin and Saul are alive and well even though they were supposed to be targeted by Kuzan hints at the fact that Kuzan could be playing for his agenda.
- Based on what we’ve seen him do and say, it is safe to assume that Kuzan is mostly a morally conscious person.
- He was never keen on Akainu’s Absolute Justice ideology. Another noteworthy point would be the core properties of his ability, ice, which is often correlated to concepts like Cryo-Preservation.
- If we go down that line of thinking, it opens up a lot of possibilities through which Kuzan could’ve saved Garp unbeknownst to the rest of the Blackbeard Pirates.
Conclusion
If Kuzan truly has some hidden agenda for joining the Blackbeard Pirates, it makes sense why he’d want Garp out of the picture in a non-lethal way. His Devil Fruit has both the range and the power required to pull such a feat off, which makes it more and more possible.
