Overwatch 2: New Hero and Free-To-Play PvP Mode Release Date

Overwatch 2 - New Heroes

In yesterday’s Xbox and Bethesda showcase, a few exciting announcements were made for Overwatch 2. First, Junker Queen is the newest hero for Overwatch 2. And second, the long-awaited PvP mode for Overwatch 2 is free-to-play. Read on to know the latest news about the upcoming sequel.

After announcing Sojourn, Junker Queen is the newest hero for Overwatch 2

Blizzard Entertainment made a special announcement during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase that went down last June 12. Following the announcement of Sojourn, Junker Queen joins the roster of heroes for the Overwatch sequel. But if you’ve been a fan of the game for a long time, then you’ve definitely seen references to Junker Queen in the first game.

From Junkrat’s animated short, we can see Junker Queen on one of the posters in Junkertown. In the poster, she is holding a large axe. Additionally, she’s somehow connected to heroes Roadhog and Junkrat. Maybe we’ll find out more about her lore in the upcoming sequel.

In her own trailer, we see Junker Queen battling it out in a dome to become the ruler of Junkertown. Based on the quick look we got at her gameplay, she is going to be the newest Tank hero for Overwatch. We can expect more details about her character and skillset in the coming weeks following her announcement.

The PvP mode for Overwatch 2 is going into early access soon… and it’s going to be free-to-play

The second big announcement about Overwatch is related to its PvP mode. During their special appearance, Blizzard Entertainment revealed that the PvP mode will release on October 4 through early access.

But the highlight of their PvP mode is that it’s going to be free-to-play. Contrary to the first Overwatch game, it’s exciting to see where Blizzard decides to bring the sequel as it will be free-to-play soon.

If we recall a while back when the concept art for Overwatch 2 was posted, it’s likely the Season Pass will become a thing. And like other free-to-play shooters (Fortnite, Apex Legends, etc.), they will mostly rely on strategies like Season Passes or loot boxes for monetization.

However, this may also affect the way players can get the new heroes. If they do push through with this, we may see another Apex Legends strategy where you had to earn or purchase a certain amount of in-game currency to unlock characters.
