March 29, 2023 – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) scored its biggest drug bust after seizing an alleged ₱4 billion worth of methamphetamine, also called locally as “shabu”. PDEA Cordillera and Police Regional Drug Enforcement Unit (RDEU) intercepted about 575 kilos of the said contraband in Baguio City, Philippines. With such a huge transfer of drugs, who could be behind all of this?
The ₱4 billion drug bust in Baguio: Who are the culprits?
Earlier today, the biggest drug scandal in Philippine history made the headlines. More or less 375 kilos of Shabu packed in more than 500 teabags with Chinese characters were confiscated in an apartment in Purok 4, Barangay Irisan, Baguio City. A Chinese national named Hui Ming also known as “Tan” was arrested during the anti-narcotics operation.

The syndicate that Hui Ming represents is still unknown to the public but the Chinese narco will be facing criminal charges in violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. These packs of shabu were being monitored and tracked down by the police in the past few months. Ming and his confidants were reportedly operating in Metro Manila and were en route to distributing the drugs in many parts of Luzon. However, when intelligence was close to busting the operation, the drugs were moved to another place. Eventually, after three weeks, PDEA and the authorities were able to get their hands on them in Baguio.

In September 2021, a drug bust of a similar magnitude shocked the whole country. The authorities bagged shabu worth ₱3.4 Billion, previously the biggest recorded drug haul.
Back when Rodrigo Duterte was still the Philippines’ president, the authorities also confiscated shabu worth 3.4 Billion Philippine pesos in Zambales. In connection to that, a 1.2 Billion peso drug haul also took place in Cavite. The suspects were also Chinese natives who put the drugs in a similar fashion – through tea bags.
Although the Chinese nationals were killed during the operation, this raises a big question for our foreheads. Are the Chinese creating a huge narcotic network in the Philippines? It seems that the suspects in 2021 and Hui Ming work for the same group since they have similar methods. They’re also working in the underground mainly in Luzon. Moreover, their products are already worth billions of pesos, which is already quite alarming. The secretary of Interior and Local Government, Benhur Abalos, believes that this is already a concern for the whole nation, not just for Baguio.
