Rockstar still hasn’t released more details about GTA 6 including a potential release date or a short description of what it may be about. Although GTA 5’s Story and Online Mode are both fun, we all need something new after a while. If you’re looking for games to play while waiting for GTA 6, here are some PS5 games we think will scratch that itch.
Some titles in this list have been around even before the PS5 was released. Thanks to the “Backwards Compatibility” feature of the Sony PS5, you can enjoy these games in high definition 4K quality.
Sony PS5 games to play while waiting for GTA 6
The GTA series is known for the hundreds of hours of content it offers to players. It’s like every nook and cranny of the map can be explored and the game will still give you something to do. The latest GTA game released is over nine years old but fresh content is delivered to its Online Mode.
But of course, all good things must come to an end. It’s normal for a gamer to want something new especially if they’ve explored almost all of GTA 5‘s Los Santos. With the lack of information on GTA 6, you may be wondering if there are other games you can play while waiting.
Lucky for you, there are tons of open-world sandbox games like the GTA series. The best part is these games are also available on Sony’s PS5. Here are some of the PS5 games we recommend you try while waiting for GTA 6 to be released.
Watch Dogs 2
In my opinion, Watch Dogs 2 is just as good as games like GTA 5. Its predecessor wasn’t good but Ubisoft was able to get back on its feet after that Aiden catastrophe. The map of Watch Dogs 2 isn’t jam-packed with content like Los Santos, but the beauty of San Francisco makes up for it.
It won’t take you long to get upgrades for your gadgets, too. After a few hours of playing, it’s likely you’ll unlock the upgrade to steal cars without alerting anyone nearby. This is one of our top recommendations to play if you’re in the mood for some games similar to GTA.
You’ll also take on missions that expose you to the weirdness of some people. One of the last missions I remember playing in Watch Dogs 2 is rescuing a celebrity from a cult disguised as a rehab center.
There’s plenty to like about Watch Dogs 2 including its rich storytelling, a vast open-world map, and the uniqueness of each character.
I first came across this game on the PC during a Steam sale. Aside from the stellar voice cast this game has, Sleeping Dogs features a unique combat system perfect for action fans. This is also a good game to pick up for gamers who want to play in a place that isn’t based in the United States.
In Sleeping Dogs, you play an undercover cop in Hong Kong as you work on bringing down street gangs. This game definitely brought out the inner Bruce Lee in me as I took on mobs of gangsters while playing.
It also features a great storyline where you’ll find yourself either frustrated or sympathizing with the main character. It’s important to note that Sleeping Dogs isn’t as packed with side missions as GTA is but nonetheless, you’ll definitely enjoy this title.
If you’re looking for a game that’s recently released, you should check out Cyberpunk 2077. It’s no secret that this game went through hell and back upon release because of all the bugs and glitches. Thankfully, the devs have been working non-stop to make up for all the areas they fell short on.
There isn’t anything groundbreaking about the entire story of Cyberpunk 2077. What sets it apart from other roleplaying open-world games is the amount of customization you have access to in this game.
It’s like a modern version of Skyrim set in the distant future and I believe it’s worth checking out. Another reason it’ll be worth trying is the amount of future content it will receive since the game isn’t that old.
Red Dead Redemption 2
In my honest opinion, Red Dead Redemption 2 should be on every list of must-play games. Regardless of which platform you play on, RDR 2 is a title every gamer must play at least once. This game features a large map with loads of surprises waiting for you.
I’ve been playing this game for years now but I still haven’t finished the Story Mode. It’s not that the story of RDR 2 isn’t interesting but the blame is all on the side missions I encounter while riding horseback through the vast map.
The side missions are what make RDR 2 a must-play game on platforms like the PS5 if you’re looking for a GTA alternative. You’ll also have the ability to customize Arthur Morgan, the protagonist of the game.
This game is perfect for players who are looking for a GTA game set in the Wild, Wild West. Playing it on the PS5 also gives you a better experience overall since the visuals in this game are amazing. It’s definitely worth checking out if you want to try something new.
If the other games on this list still fail to scratch that itch while waiting for GTA 6, maybe it’s Yakuza 0 you need to try. Yakuza 0 takes inspiration from GTA’s power to make its cities come alive with every game they release. In this game, you’re immersed in an open-world map where there are tons of things to do.
Some silly features in GTA 5 include doing yoga and playing tennis against NPCs. In Yakuza 0, you’re able to perform karaoke, go bowling, and dance your heart out to upbeat tunes. It also features arcade machines where you can play SEGA games like Out Run and Fantasy Zone.
The best thing about this is Yakuza games are part of this month’s PS Plus catalog. So if you have an active PS Plus subscription, go ahead and try Yakuza 0 and see if it’s what you’re looking for!
The only catch is it doesn’t have an official PS5 release but you can still play it because of Backwards Compatibility. Sony also has a disclaimer that although it’s playable on the PS5, there may be features missing in the newer-gen console.
These are only some of the games you can play while waiting for GTA 6 to release. Sure, there are other open-world games that may help in making you wait until the next GTA game.
But from experience, these are games that aren’t GTA yet they’ll still give you that same enjoyable feeling. Let us know if there are other PS5 games you think would do the job of feeling like we’re in the world of GTA.
