PlayStation’s Answer To Xbox Game Pass

PlayStation

Gamer or not, everyone is aware of the two gaming world giants – Sony and Microsoft. Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox pose a neck-to-neck competition in the gaming console market. This competition motivates them to be better and come with new ideas to curve the interest of the fans in their favor.

For this PlayStation Studios and Xbox Game Studios have come up with some exclusive games for their own consoles. For example, God of War by PlayStation Studios, and Halo by Xbox Game Studios. So, at this point, each of these gaming giants has its own consoles and its own studios. Essentially, the only thing which gives Microsoft a little edge over Sony sometimes is the Xbox Game Pass. It now seems like Sony has an answer for it!

David Jaffe’s Statement

David Scott Jaffe is an American video game designer who is known for his contribution to Sony’s Twisted Metal and God of War franchises. According to David, PlayStation is working on a reply to Xbox Game Pass. He mentioned that people at Sony had told him that they were doing some stuff as a response to Game Pass.

In response to a fan comment, Jaffe said:

“We had the guy on the show yesterday that had made the petition to fire Jim Ryan. And I was like, ‘dude, that’s way premature’ because Jim Ryan doesn’t owe anybody. Sony doesn’t owe anybody, the truth about what’s coming and what their counter-punch to Game Pass is.”

About the Service

David clearly mentioned that he did not know about the details of the upcoming service. This could be a different service or an enhanced version of the PlayStation Now service, but it seems like the former. Some time ago, it was announced that the PlayStation Now service would not include first-party titles. That aside, it also saw a price drop to $10 USD a month. Therefore, Sony might be looking into something different and more Xbox Game Pass-like.

For those who are unaware, Xbox Game Pass grants users access to a rotating catalog of games from a range of publishers and other premium services. It is available for Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One consoles, Windows 11 and Windows 10, as well as Android and iOS devices via Xbox Cloud Gaming.

  1. Sony isn’t going to counter punch. At least not effectively.

Ryan flat out told you PS players that. Sony doesn’t think Game Pass style subscription is viable for Sony or Microsoft for that matter. He sited the $120 million price tag on some games as the reason. Whatever Sony does offer isn’t going to be like Game Pass. Where you get the rotating titles and day 1 access to exclusive games for Xbox. There’s no counter punch just an attempt for Sony to say they offer something similar but not similar.

  2. Ok first of all, thered only one gaming giant and its not xbox or sony. Its nintendo. And 2nd, xbox has game pass and sony has had their own for years now called playstation now.

    1. Except Sony holds the top 3 spots for most home game consoles sold. Or four of the top five if you don’t include the Switch, which is just a handheld system with a dock anyway.

    2. Roger, I’m not sure where you’re getting your information from. Everything you said is just simply wrong.

I’ll respond to the second thing first since that’s quicker. PS Now is very different from Game Pass. For starters, it only gives you access to older games on previous generations (ie all PS4 or older). Secondly, it’s primarily for streaming games (although PS4 and PS2 games can also be downloaded locally). Game pass is more about giving you access to games without paying for them directly. Unless you decide to stream them on XCloud, you just play the games like normal. Game pass is about access to games without paying directly. PS NOW is about playing older games and streaming.

As to the other thing you said, in what world is Nintendo the only giant in gaming???? If you are not restricting to hardware manufacturers, there are companies like NetEase, Tencent, etc that made more profit than Nintendo even made in 2019 (source: Apple vs Epic lawsuit court documents). If you’re going by market cap today, in USD, Nintendo’s is $58.292B. Sony’s is $129.897B. Microsoft’s is $2.268T. Of course, Sony and Microsoft do other things, so that isn’t a fair comparison. So let’s compare they’re revenue in the gaming departments in 2020 in USD (not all of them have complete 2021 numbers yet). Nintendo’s total revenue in 2020 was $12.115B (source: staistica). Sony’s was $25.04B (source: statistics). Microsoft’s is harder to pinpoint, and they are more coy about their gaming segment’s numbers, but based on different sources, including Microsoft’s 2020 financial report, it appeared to be around ~$10B.

Based on all the data, Nintendo is not the largest gaming company by any standard, unless you’re counting just handheld non-phone/tablet gaming metrics.

I know I shouldn’t have spent this much time on a post, but just wanted to correct this.

  3. Kinda just wish all co soles can just cone together tbh, kinda sick of exclusivity and shit, would love ps players to try halo, and gears as they are great games, and i would li e to play god of war, and uncharted as well as the last of us, but sadly that will probabaly never happen

    1. That’s stupid. If all consoles merge, that console would be a monopolist in the market. Inherently bad and would take advantage of the consumer, leaving players with limited choice.

  4. The name in the first line is incorrect. You have written Scott, and its David, you have mentioned him correctly in the article further. Please correct so

    1. You have a keen eye but his full name is David Scott Jaffe. So, we used David, Scott, and Jaffe at various points in the article.

  5. Gamepass sucks idk why people constantly hype it up. Idc for ps now either. Streaming services are wack! Own your games, get something tangible for your money! Don’t let these companies jip you!! The games on Game pass are old as hell and you’ll never own them. And you don’t want first party titles going to game pass because that means they have little to no content and are riddled with micro transactions. It breaks my heart what they are doing to Halo. So many memories playing Halo since the original on the original Xbox. Look I like Playstation Xbox and Nintendo. But I hate these streaming services and subscription fees. I will never buy no digital console and I don’t think it should cost money to play online! Definitely by PlayStation and Xbox but don’t sign up for their streaming services. Buy the games instead, that way you aren’t constantly paying a fee and you can do whatever you want with the game

    1. Hate to break it to you, but eventually everything will be digital. It’s just the hair of the beast. So one day you’ll either but digital or you won’t buy at all. You can try and argue whatever point you have, you will be wrong. I like disc and all but I understand the evolution of technology and just like the floppy disc, your children’s children will have never heard of a disc. Thank you for playing and thank you for paying.

    2. You really couldnt be more wrong. Most games are new, even come out on gamepass on day one and no they aren’t riddled with micro transactions. Maybe try it out before talking about it cuz you sound like an idiot. Additionally you need to pay for online services anyways to be able to play multiplayer so its not any different, your just getting actual good games to play with the service. You’re really behind on the times here bud but whatever stay mad i guess.

    3. Game Pass and Playstation Now aren’t exclusively streaming services, both allow you to download games to play them. And, as somebody who doesn’t often replay games, paying a small monthly fee to have hundreds of games available to play is a pretty good deal. If I don’t like a game I’m not out $60, but if I do like the game and want to keep playing it after it gets removed I can still buy it.

  6. Yikes hate the biased articles. “Give Sony a little edge sometimes” it’s not little. Sony has done nothing really this year (except downgrade the hardware in the systems they’re selling, yikes) Microsoft has been making strides. I’d love a real competition because it breeds a better end product for everyone, but much like the ps4 blew the one away, series x is firmly on top so far this gen.

  7. First off. Underwhelming assessment of GamePass. Day in Date release of Xbox Studios & partner titles. The current rage over Starfield shows the future. 2021 there is Forza, Flight Simulator: Top Gun, Halo Infinite. More in 2022 on quicker release cycles. You get old titles with 60-130FPS boost (No Fees). Lot one may not fork out 70$ USD to play just there. Try at no risk. It is not another fee, subscription. GamePass is your annual membership included and Ultimate gets you EA library plus PC, Xbox One, mobile access to stream at device resolution up to 1080p. Old games equal insert disc, download patch & play.

Sony is an additional payment for PlayStation Now on top of PlayStation Plus. Then you get previous generation PS4 downloads, trivial discount on PS5 purchases of select titles. The rest from PS4-PS1 era stream & only available in regions with sufficient Internet bandwidth.

The Sony ponys won’t gripe, complain or protest 70$ US Titles. Won’t protest loss of progress or paying again when a PS5 version ships on many titles.

Don’t even need GamePass for Smart Delivery or Cloud Saves that avoid those obstacles. Nevermind Sony’s download, copy, install of titles. Fired up Xbox, Destiny 2 patch installs & one can start playing. PS5 either start game, be told of update or right click, manage to see it needs to download. Outside this games download in background and are ready next time you launch. Never on PS anything.

  8. Funny.. we all see Playstation beating Xbox….unless you’re a fanboy…the best Microsoft could offer is more master chief repetition? Halo? Yeah,no thanks.
