Niantic announced a new event beginning on January 27, 2023, called the Crackling Voltage. With it will be the return of the Team Go Rocket Takeover event featuring all-new rewards and Pokemon. The takeover will begin on February 1, 2023, and will run until February 5. Similar to previous events, it will begin at midnight local time and end at midnight on February 5 as well. Here’s everything else you need to know about the event:

What to Expect

During a Team Go Rocket Takeover, balloons and members will be appearing more often for players to battle. You’ll see more black PokeStops indicating their influence, and balloons will visit your area more often. To remove them, you’ll have to defeat different Rocket grunts and leaders. Aside from their usual shadow Pokemon, we can expect to see the release of new ones as well, including shadow versions of:

  • Joltik (and Galvantula)
  • Alolan Vulpix (and Alolan Ninetails)
  • Blitzle (and Zebstrika)
  • Spoink (and Grumpig)

This marks the first time these Shadow Pokemon will be appearing. Alongside them will also be the release of their shiny versions. Players will also get rewards to help Shadow Pokémon forget the charged attack frustration. Removing it will be through a Charged TM they can get as a reward.

Raids and Spawns

The 5th Tier raids will feature Crackling Voltage’s Tapu Koko as its main star. During the Team Go Rocket Takeover event, expect to see a lot more Shadow Registeel fight in raids. Mega Pokemon will Aerodactyl during the start of the Crackling Voltage event, later switching to Gengar.

For the spawns, players will now be able to catch a shiny Helioptile and Heliolisk. Helioptile’s spawn rate is boosted for the event. We’ll also get increased appearances from the following Pokemon:

  • Ekans
  • Grubbin
  • Dedenne
  • Magnemite
  • Grimer
  • Beldum
  • Elektrike
  • Ferroseed
  • Blitzle
  • Stunky

Eggs

Helioptiles appearing in 7km eggs have a higher chance of becoming shiny. 7KM eggs will also contain the following Pokemon:

  • Stunfisk (both versions)
  • Dedenne
  • Blitzle
  • Skarmory
  • Alolan Sandshrew

There will also be an update to the 12km eggs during the event. Pokemon you can hatch include:

  • Deino
  • Pawniard
  • Vullaby
  • Skorupi
  • Larvitar
  • Salandit
  • Pancham
  • Skrelp
  • Sandile
  • Scraggy

Prepare for Trouble

Like other events, a Special Research story featuring Rocket’s leader Giovanni will begin on February 1. It will contain unique rewards, but the details of them haven’t been released yet. The event will also connect with February’s community day.

After the end of the Team Rocket Go takeover, players can participate in the Noibat Community day. For a few hours, players will see more of them spawn in the wild with a greater chance to land shiny versions. Evolving Noibat during the event will also give them a unique move they can only get during this time.

Monthly events continue for Pokemon Go and have become a staple for the community. There’s always something new to catch every few weeks, so it pays to come back once in a while and play.
