The recent Nintendo Direct Showcase brought a surprise announcement for the return of the beloved detective, Professor Layton, in a teaser for a new game titled “Professor Layton and the New World of Steam.”
Although not much is known about the game at the moment, it is developed by Level-5 and stars Professor Herschel Layton, and it appears to be coming to the West. This is particularly exciting news as Level-5 has been facing financial difficulties and limiting its international releases.
What will Professor Layton’s new game feature?
The game marks a return to the classic Professor Layton series after the disappointing “Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy.” Fans can be excited that the series is back in its roots and under the direction of Level-5.
However, it may take a while to learn more about the game, including the release date. For now, fans can be thrilled to know that their lessons in becoming a gentleman with Professor Layton are back at Nintendo.
What will the new Professor Layton and The New World of Steam Be About?
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a classic Professor Layton game on a Nintendo platform, but the latest adventure promises a new mystery. The game is set in a mechanical city, which will likely have a significant impact on the puzzles and obstacles players will need to overcome to solve the mystery at the heart of the game.
No release date has been announced for Professor Layton and The New World of Steam yet. The announcement did not include any information regarding the release window.
The ergonomics of puzzle solving – what to expect?
Fans may be elated to buy Layton games on Nintendo Switch in a heartbeat. Anyone who grew up with the series will be more than just happy to see their favourite character back. Although how the game carries out the different puzzle mechanics will depend upon the new Puzzle master.
Is a crossover with Phoenix Wright x Layton possible?
Old fans still rejoice Phoenix Wright Trilogy which was released on Switch eventually. As such, it feels only more hopeful to long for a Wright x Layton crossover game on Switch. Whether such a thing is possible or not is still up to anyone’s guessing.
The Nintendo 3DS games may not be of suiting to the ones used to the older consoles. But with how versatile Switch is, Professor Layton and The New World of Steam may have been just what we needed.
When will the game release?
It is speculated that the game may be released in 2024, given the limited information revealed during the initial announcement and the brief teaser.

It appears that fans of the series may have to wait a bit longer to experience Professor Layton’s beloved puzzle adventures again.
The Professor Layton series was a huge hit on the DS and 3DS for many years, with four main games released on the DS and three on the 3DS, as well as a mobile spin-off game. The franchise also expanded to include a feature film in 2009, a 50-episode anime, and a manga.
