PS5: Fastest-Selling Console In UK, 1 Million+ Units Sold

According to GfK data, the PlayStation 5 has sold more than one million units in the UK. The PS5 became the fastest-selling PlayStation in the UK in August; 39 weeks after its release in Europe on November 19. It also surpassed the PS4’s turnaround time in Japan.

Up to this point, the PS4 had sold more in the United Kingdom in the same time frame. However, that shifted this summer with a raise in stock. Amidst a shaky start to the month, the PS5 was the best-selling console in August, but that quickly changed with the arrival of additional units. The Nintendo Switch was the second most popular console, though sales were down from July, and the Xbox Series S and X were third.

Best Selling Game in August

In August, 1.86 million physical and digital games were sold, up 6.3% from the same month the previous year. Physical sales dropped 4.1% to 691,000 units, despite a 13.6% rise of digital sales to 1.17 million. Physical game sales remain vital for Nintendo, making up 21% of total game sales in August. PS4 has 36.4% of the digital distribution market, and Ubisoft has 19.4%. Nintendo does not provide sales figures for digital products.

  • Grand Theft Auto 5, which was released in 2013 and will be reissued for the new systems, was the best-selling game in August.
  • The Director’s Cut of Ghost of Tsushima was the second best-selling game, replicating the circumstance from August 2020, when the initial Ghost of Tsushima was among the month’s best-sellers along with EA UFC 4.

Best Selling Accessory

The PS5 DualSense White controller was the best-selling accessory, followed by the PS4 Dualshock. The DualSense Black, DualSense Red, and the Pulse 3D Wireless Headset for PS4 and PS5 are the next headsets to be released.

In total, 632,822 accessories were sold in August in the United Kingdom, up 9.3% from July but 1.2 percent less than August 2020 – one month, such as the remainder of 2020, with constrained recreational measures due to COVID-19.
